To Speak At
Second Baptist
Bill Mathis, halfback for the
New York Jets, will be featur
ed speaker Wednesday night at
the Second Baptist Church at
7:30.
Mathis, from Manchester, Ga.,
attended Clemson University,
graduating in 1959. Since gradua
tion, he has been employed by
the New York Jets. His first
three years, he played fullback
and the last three have been
spent as a halfback.
At present, Mathis Is operat
ing a construction business in
Atlanta, Ga.
The program will consist of a
ahort talk, a film and will be cli
maxed with a question and an
swer period.
An Informal social will follow
the service.

Examiners At
Post Wednesday
Through Sat
The Griffin State Patrol Post
today reminded Griffinites that
the license examiners are in
Griffin Wednesday through Sat
urday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Those persons having their
license renewed or who plan to
purchase a license for the first
time have been asked to come
to the post on these days.
License* will be Issued on the
four days of each week, except
on holidays.
Corporal C. L. Taylor said the
Griffin Post had been receiving
an excessive amount of calls In
quiring about the dates the ex
aminers are at the post.
He said the examiners rotate
Mondays and Tuesdays in the
other four counties served by
the Post.
He said persons who have lost
their license should report to the
post on one of the four days and
have their picture remade and
get a new license.
Corporal Taylor said Griffini
tes should come to the office and
talk with the examiners about
any questions concerning their
licease instead of phoning the
officer on duty.

Mrs. Roberts
Dies Today
Mrs. Louise May Roberts, 56,
of 550 North Eighth street, died
this morning at the Grif
fin-Spaldlng Hospital.
She was born In Gainesville,
Ga., and had lived in Griffin for
past 34 years. She was a re
tired Griffin Division Thomas
Mills employe.
Survivors include her husband,
F. Roberts; two sons, Ja
Dudley Roberts of Griffin,
Lee Roberts of Gainesville;
two sisters, Mrs. Rebie
College Park, Mrs. Mamie
Knight of East Point, Ga.;
grandson, Lee Roberts of
Griffin. Several nieces and
also survive.
Funeral arrangements will be
announced by McDonald Chapel.

A dinner meeting of the Sixth
District Pharmaceutical Asso
ciation will be held at 7:00 p.m.,
on Wednesday, March 23, at the
Griffin Elk’s Club, Williamson
road, Griffin, according to Geor
ge C. Smith, Jr., LaGrange,
president of the district associa
tion.
An afternoon of golfing at the
Griffin Golf Course has been
planned to precede the meeting.

Has Meeting
The Orrs School 4-H Club met
Monday with the president, Jo
anne Baxter, president, in char
ge. Pam Chalkley gave the de
votional. Twenty-six members
were present.
Miss Linda Burns distributed
leaflets concerning the “Coun
ty Project Achievement”. Miss
Burns talked to the Club on nail
care.
The song leader, Nancy Smi
th, led the group In songs and
Judye Bunn gave a demonstra
tion on the care of a child.

FHA Chapter
At the March meeting of the
Future Homemakers of America
officers were elected to serve for
the 1966-67 term. Miss Miriam
Davis was elected president.
Other officers to serve with
Miss Davis are: vice-president,
Becky Gray; secretary, Nadine
Massingale; treasurer, Mary
Larson; and chaplain, Donna
Fields.
The new project for the club Is
to assist with the breakfast spon
sored by the American Cancer
Society cm April 2 at the Rural
Urban Center.
Two Wrecks In
Area Monday
No one was injured in two
accidents in the Griffin area
Monday, according to the Grif
fin State Patrol.
John Black Hollingsworth of
Henderson, Ky., and William Ed
ward Roberts of Route Two, Tho
maston, were listed as drivers
of vehicles Involved In an acci
dent six-tenths of a mile north
of Griffin on U. S. 41.
Investigating troopers estima
ted damage at $3,500.
Rufus F. Bennett of Route
Three McDonough was listed as
the driver of a car involved in
an accident 1.4 miles north of
McDonough on U. S. 23 and Ge
orgia 42.
Damage to his car was esti
mated at $200.

The appointment of Dr.
Juan M. Portuondo as act
ing director of Education
for Milledgeville State
Hospital was announced
by Dr. Irville H. MacKin
non, superintendent. Dr
Portuondo brings to his
new position a wide back
ground of medical exper
ience in both the clinical
and teaching fields. He
graduated magna cum
laude in 1940 from the
Havana Medical School
and took numerous post
graduate courses at John
Hopkins and Harvard
Medical School. In 1953
he was appointed professor
in internal medicine at the
Havana Medical School
and served as president of
the Board of the University
Hospital in Havana for five
years.
Spalding Greys
Hold Drill
At Armory
The Spalding Grays held their
monthly drill this past weekend
at the National Guard Armory
on Zebulon road.
Sergeant Ralph Bozeman tau
ght a class on chemical, radio
logical and biological warfare
defense Saturday morning. Al
so Saturday morning, the troops
were reviewed in close order
marching drill.
On the job training was car
ried out by the men In their In
dividual sections Saturday after
noon.
Minister Evans McMullen of
the Chucrh of Christ conducted
the Sunday morning devotion
al service.
Fourteen recruits In the unit
are awaiting orders to report for
their six months active duty.
Sunday they studied camouflage
and conceilment. Cadet Albert
Flournoy was in charge of their
training.
Sunday morning, the medical
section conducted a thorough
sanitation inspection of each
man’s mess kit as well as kitch
en facilities and utensils.
Plans are being made for the
unit to go to Fort McClellan,
Ala , for annual weekend firing
on May 14-15. Each member of
the unit must qualify with their
weapon every three years.
The Spalding Grays will meet
for their next weekend dril on
April 16.

Present Show
In Barnesville
BARNESVILLE, Ga. — T. L.
Sheppard, one of the country’s
top professional magicians, will
come to Barnesville on Friday
night, March 18.
The well-known performer,
who has played before audien
ces from coast to coast and ap
peared on numerous TV shows,

show at the Gordon Alumni Me

Attend Meeting
In Cobb County

High School attended the district
spring meeting of the FHA Clubs
at Wheeler High School in Cobb
County.
