Man Held On
Rape Charge
Willie Pack, Jr. of Griffin was
being held in Spalding County
Jail today on charges of rape.
A warrant was sworn Sunday
for Pack’s arrest, charging him
with raping a 15-year-old girl
Sunday on the Walker’s Mill
road in Spalding County.
Pack was arrested by Spald
ing County Deputy Sheriff Jack
Taylor.
COURT MEETS
WASHINGTON (UPI) —The
Supreme Court meets today to
hand down opinions and orders
before recessing until April 18.
The court now has about 30
cases under advisement.

Student Nonviolent Coordinat
ing Committee canceled a
morning street march today to
back up school improvement
demands but announced there
would be an afternoon demon
stration.
About 75 to 80 Negroes gath
ered in Baker’s Chapel for the
morning march before It was
called off. From 200 to 300 per
sons demonstrated almost daily
last week.

en In Greenwood, Miss.
A court hearing was sched
uled Tuesday for six integra
tionists charged In connection
with defacing the U S. flag dur
ing a wild demonstration last
week.

The pre-school registration
for students who will enter the
first grade this fall at East Grif
fin will be held Wednesday from
8:30 until 10:30 a.m. Parents
have been asked to bring birth
certificates when registering
the children.

A “drive through and pick
up chicken supper” will be held
at Fourth Ward School on Fri
day, April 15. Tickets, which are
one dollar, may be obtained by

April 12. The supper Is being

No One Injured
In Four Wrecks
No one was injured in four
wrecks investigated by the Grif
fin State Patrol Saturday and
Sunday.
Hayden C. Hill, 32. of Estill
Springs, Tenn., and Freddie W.
Schroer HI of Ray City, Ga.,
were listed as drivers of cars In
volved in an accident 3.6 miles
south of Griffin on U. S. 41.
Damage to the two cars was
estimated at $1,000.
William J. Brooks, 45, and
Warren H. Griggs, 50, both of
Atlanta, were listed as drivers
of cars involved In an mishaps
two miles south of Jackson on
Georgia 42.
Damage to their cars was es
timated at $300.
James Weldon Anthony of Gr
iffin was listed as the driver of
a car Involved In an accident
2.9 miles north of Griffin on the
Seven Forks road.
Troopers estimated damage to
his car at $400.
Damage was estimated at $125
In an accident three-tenths of a
mile east of Barneavllle on the
Johnsonville road.
Drivers of cars were listed as
James Drlscall and Andrew Ful
ler, both of Barnesville.
Woman Charged
In Stabbing Case
Mrs. Mary Thomas of Zebulon
has been charged with assault
with intent to murder in con
nection with a stabbing incident
here last week.
Her bond was set at $3,000.
Mrs. Thomas was charged with
stabbing Mrs. Louise Griggers
19 times with a homemade ice
pick.
Mrs. Griggers swore out the
assault with intent to murder
warrant Sunday.

Buried Today
Mr. Howard Bass Gossett, Sr.
of Sunny Side died early Satur
day night.
He was bom in Monroe Coun
ty, coming to Griffin 58 years
ago. Mr. Gossett was a retired
employe of the Crompton High
land Mills. He was a member
of the Georgia Fox Hunters Asso.
and served as field judge for the
Georgia Florida field trials.
Survivors include his widow,
Mrs. Mary Lou Norris Gossett
of Sunny Side; two daughters,
Mrs. Joel C. Taylor of Hamp
ton, Mrs. Russell Smith of Sun
ny Side; five sons, Fred Gos
sett, Howard B. Gossett, Jr.,
both of Sunny Side, Lamar Gos
sett, Frank Gossett, both of Gr
iffin and William Gossett of
Bainbridge; 20 grandchildren,
six great grandchildren and se
veral nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Gos
sett were conducted this after
noon at 2 o'clock from Pittman
Rawls Chapel. The Rev. John O.
Brown and the Rev. Robert M.
Lloyd officiated and burial was
In the Sunny Side Methodist
Church cemetery. Pittman
Rawls Funeral Home was In
charge of plans.

Will Talk To
Griffin ABC
George T. Smith, speaker of
the House in the state legisla
ture, will speak to the O-lffin
Chapter, American Business
Club, at the Club’s Tuesday
meeting.
The speaker is expected to dis
cuss a number of state Issues In
his talk to the Griffin club.
19 Injured In
Stand Collapse
Nineteen people were injured
when a temporary stand slow
ly collapsed at the Griffin Na
tional Guard Armory Saturday
night during a wrestling match.
Four of them were admitted
to the Griffin - Spalding Hospi
tal. The others were treated In
the emergency room and dis
missed.

tified as Mrs. Ethel Johnson,
1003 North Hill street; Mrs. Nan
cy Lybrand of 404 Spring View
drive; Emmett Taylor of 405 Pa
lace street, and Mrs. Joyce Gr
ant, Route Two, all of Griffin,
A spokesman for the National
Guard Armory today said that
the match was sponsored by
ABC Booking Co. of Atlanta. The
guard building Is leased to the
concern for the matches.
WOMEN’S LUNCHEON
WASHINGTON (UPI) —The
wives of the nation’s Democra
tic governors will be guests of
honor at a special luncheon
April 19 during the 1966
campaign conference for Demo
cratic women. Vice President
Hubert H. Humphrey’s wife
Muriel will be the principal
speaker at the affair.

Mrs. Miller Of
Blairsville Dies
Mrs. Sarah Miller, 91. of
Blairsville, Ga., formerly of Gr
iffin, died Saturday afternoon at
the home of her daughter, Mrs.
Dennis Hampton of Blairsville.
Other survivors include one
daughter, Mrs. Wayne Plem
mons of Griffin; two sons. Hen
ry W. Miller of Griffin, Jewell
Miller of Murphy, N. C.; four
grandchildren and one great gr
andchild.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mil
ler were conducted this after
noon at 2 o’clock from the New
Martin Creek Church in Mur
phy, N. C. Burial followed in the
church cemetery. Townsend Fu
neral Home of Murphy, N. C.,
was in charge of arrangements.
Griffinite’s
Brother Dies
Dr. Herschel C. Crawford, pro
minent Atlanta physician for 35
years, died Sunday in a private
hospital. Dr. Crawford was the
brother of Mrs. William R. King,
Sr., of Griffin.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Tuesday afternoon at 1
o’clock at Spring Hill in Atlan
ta. Dr. Monroe F. Swilley will
officiate and burial will be in Ar
lington cemetery.
