State Patrol
Improvements II
Efforts are underway to improve the Georgia State
Patrol. It is a good organization which does a good job,
but improvements are in order, and the Griffin Daily
News is glad to see them come.
Of primary local importance is construction of the new
State Patrol station adjacent to the Peace Officers build
ing on the Expressway in Griffin. We’ve heard and talk
ed about this a long time. Everybody realizes its desir
ability, and it is good that it is about to become a reality
at long last.
There is equally heartening news on the statewide
level. Last week the state troopers changed from a six
day 55-hour work week to a five-day 40-to-50 hour
week. Abo, salaries have been increased.
In order to do all this, it was necessary to change from
two-man to one-man patrok. There is added danger, but
Florida, Alabama and Kentucky already have single-man
patrob and they reportedly work well for those states.
We know of no reason why they shouldn’t work as well
in Georgia*
War Souvenirs
Are Dangerous
War is no game and war souvenirs—grenades, bullets,
shells—are not playthings. They are made to kill and they
will fulfill that purpose unless they are rendered harmless
by experts.
As time goes on you will be hearing and reading about
youngsters and adults being killed by war souvenirs that
were thought to be harmless.
Servicemen returning from Vietnam are bringing these
deadly items home with them greater numbers, just as
servicement returning from World War II and the Korean
conflict brought back their souvenirs. Even today—-a
score of years since VJ-Day and a decade after the
Korean truce—one hears of children killed by these
“antiques” that they found in an attic.
Our best advice is to get rid of these potential killers.
Contact police or Army bomb experts. They will dispose
of them.

Tax-Paid
Grocery Bill
THOMASTON FREE PRESS
The case of Dr. Irville MacKinnon, who resigned as
head of Milledgeville State Hosiptal, is nothing short of
tragic any way you look at it.
But aside from the sheer tragedy of the case let’s look
at the mechanics of it.
According to charges, the MacKinnon state-paid gro
cery bill was being padded.
“State-paid grocery bill” is the crux of this matter.
What in the world was the state doing taking tax
payer’s money to pay the grocery bill of a man who was
on the payroll for some $26,000 a year?
Are there other high-paid state employees (or low
paid ones for that matter) whose grocery tab b being
picked up by the State of Georgia?
The taxpayers have enough of a burden paying taxes
and their own grocery bills without paying another gro
cery bill for someone whose monthly check b more than
$ 2 , 000 .
While the Bowdoin Commission doesn’t feel that a
padded grocery bill isn’t enough for an investigation of
Milledgeville State Hospital we say that any individual’s
grocery bill paid out of tax fund screams for investiga
tion and a report to the citizens of Georgia on how many
others have such an arrangement.
If it takes more money to get high echelon employees
then it should be put into salary and not such a flexible
benefit as “grocery bfll.”

Revival
I read where chnrch member
ship in the U. S. has increased
to nearly 64 percent of the pop
ulation _ an all-time high. This
means that the church growth
in America is about as great as
the population growth. Does
this mean that there is a revival
of religion in America?
K. M.
It means that there Is a reviv
al of church attendance, which
does not necessarily mean that
there Is a revival of true faith
In the land. Religious revivals
in a national sense are usually
accompanied by lowered crime
statistics, higher morals, an in
crease of honesty and integrity,
and an increased national rever
ence. There is serious doubt am
ong many leaders that such
evidences abound.
While a religious revival such
as was experienced in Wales at
the turn of the century brings
about increased church atten
dance, the reverse Is not always
true. While church membership
may indicate an increased In
terest in rellgipn — it may also
indicate a searching rather
than finding.
Certainly it is better to go to
church than not to go to church,
and we should be glad for the In
crease In attendance. But Just
because the doctor's offices are
filled with people, doesn’t mean
the nation Is In good heal
th—the churches filled to over
flowing does not mean that we
are spiritually whole — but it
can be a sign that we are aware
of our spiritual needs, and this
Is good.

“Cab” is a much-used
word In the vocabulary of
many city dwellers. It is a
colloquial abbreviation of
the French cabriolet, origi
nally a passenger vehicle
drawn by two or four
horses. It was introduced
into London from Paris in
1820. London not only
turned cabriolet into cab (a
word which became official
ly enshrined in an act of
parliament, the London Cab
Act of 1896), but further in
vented for it the terms
“four-wheeler” *nd
“growler."
