About 40 of the Negroes ar
rested were released. They had
been taken into custody after
staging a clamorous demonstra
tion at the jailhouse door and
begging officers to arrest them.
Monday night, the county
Board of Education asked city
police to station themselves at
schools where Negroes have
been truant In order to par
ticipate in the demonstrations.
The police were to apprehend
them as they left school and
return them to the principal’s
office.
Crisp County Sheriff Earlie
Posey said 71 persons were ar
rested in the melee. But at
least 20 more were among
those taken into custody.
The protesters had been
marching around South View
School when Posey stopped
them.
A Negro at the head of the
line asked the demonstrators:
“We have a choice. We can
either disperse or go to jail.
What do you want to do?
“Go to jail,” the crowd
yelled, and then headed for the
courthouse.
The marchers then turned
toward the courthouse, their
ranks swelling with Negro by
standers as they marched
through town. Posey hopped in
his car and was waiting at the
jail.
Earlier, sheriff’s deputies had
arrested Negro leader Ulysses
Fulwood for last week’s flag
ripping incident at the court
house. Also arrested were 19
year-old Rufus Hinton of Atlan
ta and 19-year-old Edward An
drews of Albany. The three
were held on $100 bond each.
Nine persons in all were ar
rested in connection with the
flag-ripping.
It was the incident that
sparked Gov. Carl Sanders to
order state troopers to Cordele
to protect the American and
Georgia flags. Sunday the Ku
Klux Klan seized on the dese
cration to stage their owe, dem
onstration.
The demonstrators had ripped
the flags from their lanyards
and tried to tear them to
pieces.

The judge also dismissed a

The four-day firemen’s strike

McCollum said he defied the

All railroad workers returned
to their jobs Monday and Cen
