Tuesday, April 19, 1966
DETROIT (UPD —The Ford
Motor Co. revealed Monday
that about 30,000 of its 1966
model cars are being recalled
by dealers to correct a
production defect which could
result in brake failure.
A Ford spokesman said it
learned that about 25,000 Fords
and 5,000 Mercurys built In late
February and March were
constructed in a manner by
which brake lines could be
damaged or ruptured by a
severe jolt or bounce of the
vehicle.
Dealers began recalling the
cars on April 8 to Inspect the
brake lines and Install a clip to
re-route the lines, the company
said.
The company said it started
calling cars back after it was
reported some of the brake
lines on autos transported by
rail apparently were damaged
en route to dealers.
"No reports of brake failures
have been received from
customers,” the spokesman
said.
The disclosure by Ford came
only two weeks after Chevrolet
revealed It was recalling 1.5
million of its 1964-65 cars to
install a shield about the
throttle linkage of its Power
Glide equipped autos.

WASHINGTON (NEA)
The American aid man was tired. He’d been in from nine
months in Viet Nam for only a few days and was going right
back.
He was in a hurry to leave Washington. He resented a
little having to come back to the United States even for a
week or two to help with recruiting. He wanted the new men
all right. But he didn’t like to be hauled away from his
province. “There’s
too much that needs doing,” he said. “There
aren’t enough of us. By the time you get out to the field—
the provinces—we’re spread too thin.
“fd been out there with the Army. I decided I wanted
to go back. I believe in what we’re doing.
Viet "My whole family’s involved. My daughter is a nurse in
Nam. My son’s out there too. My wife is in Bangkok.
You won’t see me back here again for a year and a half, I
hope.
“WE RE HURTING THE VIET CONG. A farmer came in
the other day and said the VC had been taxing him 90 per
cent of his rice crop. They’re not making friends that way.
“But we’ve problems too.
“The farmers in my area complain they’re not getting the

say know the Americans are bringing it in. It’s
not getting to them. They suspect graft.
“What they don’t know is that the problem is inefficiency,
The fertilizer has been lying around in government ware
houses. There was a financial breakdown in the government
company and things stood still. Maybe they’ve got some new
money by now.
“But what do you do to get better officials? A village chief
—in charge of three to 12 hamlets—makes 1,500 piasters
(|12). A bar girl can make 10 to 20 times as much.”
THEN THERE’S GRAFT, he said.
There are a lot of refugees. The distribution of food and
for supplies themselves. tempts men who want to skim off some piasters
The province chief is an honest man. He’s started a system
he thinks will put a crimp in this food-and-materials-diversion
racket.
Now, before things go out to the refugees, the province
chief announces what each refugee is going to get. He makes
certain the word gets to everyone.
Then he sends his own man along to watch the distribution
But what he’s counting on is that if a refugee doesn’t get
what he’s been told he’s supposed to get, he’ll complain.
This province chief doesn’t stop there. Over the radio, he
asks the villagers and townspeople to write him anonymous
letters if they’ve been unlawfully taxed or if they know offi
cials who divert fertilizer or other goods to their own profit
He hasn’t caught any big fish yet. But it’s bringing some

Goldmans Wait
SURFSIDE, Fla. (UPD—The
parents of kidnaped Danny

hopefully, for some kind of
word.
It was three weeks ago Mon

Danny, 18, from his canal side
home. Since the kidnaping
March 28 the family has made
three public appeals for the
safe return of their only child.
"There is nothing new, no
contact with the kidnaper,” ac
cording to Robert Traurig, an
attorney for Aaron Goldman, a
building contractor.
The Goldmans have offered a
$25,000 ransom, reportedly the
price the kidnaper demanded
when he took Danny. Friends
and neighbors of the Goldmans
have also offered to put up an
additional $15,000.
"I am sure the Goldmans
have not given up hope that
Danny will be found,” the at
