Experts understand the advantages
of natural gas air conditioning.
The non-experts are lust thankful
for them.
Men with mechanical knowledge under
stand the simplicity of the operating cycle,
equipment longevity, lower maintenance
requirements, and all the other reasons
why natural gas air conditioning is best.
People unfamiliar with machinery are
simply thankful that natural gas systems
are so trouble-free, and so seldom in need
of service or new parts. And they’re es
pecially relieved to know that the gas
company provides prompt, reliable serv
ice when it is needed.
Technically minded or not, you will enjoy
the quiet, healthful, care-free comfort of
natural gas air conditioning in your home,
business or plant. Just call us for infor

Backstop Jim Pagliaronl suf

to his right side in the fourth
inning in attempting to throw

The Pirates gave their senior
circuit express a king-size push
uphill in the seventh inning by
executing the season’s first
triple play. Tommy Harper and
Pete Rose greeted Bob Purkey
with lead off back-to-back
singles.
Attempt Double steal
But Vada Pinson struck out
on a 3-2 pitch and Jesse
Gonder, subbing behind the
plate for Pagliaroni, fired to
third base as Rose and Harper
attempted to stage their second
double steal of the game.
Bob Bailey chased Harper
back to second, flipping the ball
to Bill Mazeroski, who made
the put out. Rose, seeing
Harper race back to second,
attempted to return to first
base but was tagged out by
Donn Clendenon.
Rookie Don Sutton posted his

The inning prior to Pit

Mazeroski, with both Bailey

followed with his double.
The Bucs’ first run came in

The Reds, who have yet to hit

Palmer Wins
Tournament
Of Champions
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (UPI) —
Arnold Palmer, who doesn’t
need it, was home practicing
today while Gay Brewer, loser
of two $20,000 playoff prizes in
a row, was back on the golfing
trail.
The steel-nerved belter from
Pennsylvania staggered Brewer
Monday in the first playoff ever
of the 14th annual Tournament
of Champions with a
stroke victory that gave him
back to back victories in the
tourney. Palmer carded a 3
under-par 69 while Brewer
faltered to a disappointing 73.
Palmer who came from
behind to the cheers of his
“army” and tied Brewer at 283
in regulation 72-hole play of the
$100,000 T of C Sunday, was
magnificent in the playoff—but
he had reservations on his skill.
Practice Irons
"I need a lot of practice with
my irons. I’m satisfied with my
woods and my putter worked
better here than it has been,”
Palmer said modestly.
But his five birdies that gave
him first money of $20,000 on
the chilly, wind-swept Desert
Inn Country Club course belied
his words. And Brewer who
took second money of $12,000
had praised Palmer’s catchup
Sunday round as “the finest
I’ve ever seen Arnie play.”
Brewer had to race for a plane
to play in the $85,000 Dallas
Open and couldn’t pause to
comment on the playoff round.
It was the Texas-based
Brewer’s second playoff loss in
a row. Ha had lost to Jack
Nicklaus a week earlier for the
Masters crown at Augusta and
by now was used to the bitter
taste of frustration.
and later scored on an infield
out
Sutton, a 21-year-old righthan
der, limited Houston to one run
and five hits until the eighth
inning when he weakened,
giving up two runs on singles
by Sonny Jackson and Joe
Morgan and a double by Rusty
Staub. Sutton finished the
inning but was replaced by Phil
Regan.
Score In First
The Dodgers scored two runs
in the first on consecutive
singles by Maury Wills, Wes
Parker and Ron Fairly and
another safety by Lou Johnson
off loser Robin Roberts, whom
the Dodgers beat in their home
opener at Los Angeles.
The Dodgers chased Roberts
with three straight singles in
the fifth, and Willie Davis
greeted relief pitcher Mike
Cuellar with a double.
Wills drove in the world
champion’s fifth run and John
Roseboro batted across the
final Doger tally in the ninth in
typical Los Angeles fashion.
Johnson doubled and scored all
the way from second on a
sacrifice bunt by Roseboro.

Russell Appointed
To Coach Celtics
By DICK DEW
DPI Sports Writer
BOSTON (UFI) —The Boston
Celtics’ coaching job will
remain in the family next
season with the precedent
shattering appointment of Ne
gro defensive wizard Bill
Russell as Red Auerbach’s
successor.
Russell’s selection as player
coach of the eight-time world
champions rocked Boston and
the National Basketball Associa
tion Monday when it was
suddenly announced in the
midst of the league’s champion
ship playoff. Russell, 32, will be
the first of his race to be head
coach of any team m major
professional sports.
Auerbach, dean of NBA
coaches, had planned to reveal
bis hand-picked choice after the
playoffs with Los Angeles but
changed his mind when he
feared the news would leak out.
Russell’s appointment ended
months of speculation on
dozens of coaches and former
Boston players. Auerbach re
vealed that the handshake
agreement with the bearded
center had followed several
weeks of discussion during
which he admittedly talked
with other possible candidates.
Russell himself singled out
the biggest problem he will
face, that of “following”
Auerbach as mastermind of the
Celtics. Auerbach has 1,033
career coaching victories but
still wants four more, which
would give the Celtics the 1965-
66 championship. Boston trails
the Lakers by an opening game
loss in the best-of-seven series
which resumes here tonight.
Russell, who earlier had
denied he had any coaching
ambitions, revealed that he had
discussed the matter with
several of his teammates and
regarded it as “the most
personalized challenge that I’ve
had in 10 years as a pro. If I
didn’t think I could do the job,
I wouldn’t have taken It.”
And Russell carries impres-
