A — High purine foods inclu
de such glandular cuts as sweet
breads, liver and kidneys, bou
illon or consomme made with
meat extract, anchovies and sar
dines. If you are taking probe
necid (Benemid) you should be
able to tolerate moderate am
ounts of even these foods.
This drug is oi no value in re
lieving an actue attack of gouty
arthritis but, when taken regu
larly for several months, it will
prevent such attacks. Since the
treatment must necessarily be
for an indefinite period your
doctor should regulate the dos
age to fit your personal need.
Q — My father, 75, has had
gouty arthritis for 30 years. He
tried taking Indocin but could
not tolerate it. Would colchicine
or Benemid be harmful for
him?
A — Indomethacin (Indocin)
relieves the pain of acute at
tacks of rheumatoid and gouty
arthritis but it may irritate the
digestive tract and cause peptic
ulcer or ulcerative colitis. Col
chicine, an old standby in the
treatment of gout, has the same
disadvantage.

oided to prevent hardening at
the arteries?
A — Avoid, the so-called sat
urated fats. In place of butter
eat margarine, but in modera
tion. Take skim milk, butter
milk and cottage cheese in pre
ference to sweet or sour cream,
ice cream, whipped cream and
cream cheese. When you eat
red meat, fowl and fish you
should trim off the fat. Gravies,
soups and stews should be pla
ced in the refrigerator so that
the fat will harden. It can then
be easily removed. Use vegeta
ble oils in cooking in preference
to lard, bacon drippings and
suet.
