Demo Candidates Tune
By United Press International
Pour announced or potential
Democratic candidates for gov
ernor tuned up for the upcom
ing campaign Thursday with
speeches and statements in dif
ferent parts of the state.
Both Ernest Vandiver, former
Georgia governor, and Pulton
Superior Court Judge Jeptha
Tanksley spoke about ways to
improve highway safety. Tanks
ley charged that the state high
way department is “pollticaUy
motivated."
Former Gov. Ellis Arnall
called for construction of a new
building to house the Senate
and the House of Representa
tives while Lester Maddox
came out in support of a pro
gram to improve the state
penal system.
Arnall and Maddox have
both announced as gubernatori
al candidates. Tanksley has sig
nified his Intention to run and
Vandiver is expected to an
nounce in the near future.
Arnall contended that the cur
rent state capital building is
inadequate for the lawmakers.

He said a new state building
should be bunt
"North Carolina has con
structed such a building,”
Arnall said in an Elberton
speech. “I want Georgia to
move forward and to provide
our legislature with adequate
faculties."
Maddox said ne supported
State Prison Director W. H.
Burson in his attempt to gain
funds for the improvement of
the state penal system. He
called Georgia’s penal system
“shamefully neglected.”
Tanksley, who spoke in Sa
vannah, attacked the highway
department as ‘the most politi
cally manipulated highway de
partment in the country” which
has resulted in “inadequate
roads.”
He called for a creation
of a new highway department
“with the power to determine
where the roads are going to
be created on the basis of need
and service to the people.”
The Pulton Superior Court
Judge recommended that many
of the more heavily traveled
roads be made into four lanes
and called for a program of
driver education for young peo
pie.
Vandiver spoke in Toccoa and
urged the construction of more
State Patrol stations, the addi
tion of more state patrolmen
and the establishment of a spe
cial program to train highway
personnel such as engineers.
Earlier in the day Vandiver
denied a statement made by
Republican Rep. Killeen ToWn
send that if elected governor
Vandiver might succeed Rich
ard Russell as U. S. senator
during his term and appoint the
lieutenant governor as gover
nor.
Vandiver said he would con
sider It his “obligation to the
people of Georgia to serve out
my full four years.”
Townsend, Vandiver and Lt.
Gov. Peter Zack Geer were all
Interviewed separately by an
Atlanta radio station.
Townsend said that if Geer
wins the Democratic primary
for lieutenant governor “there’s
going to be a lot of sick Dem
ocrats.” The Republican law
maker said the GOP should put
op a strong candidate for lieu
tenant governor and suggested
it should be State Sen. Dan Mc
Intyre.
Townsend said he believed
many Democrats would switch
over to the Republican party
“when they wake up and find
Geer has won the primary.”
Geer answered “I am de
lighted to see that Mr. Town
send virtually concedes the
Democratic nomination to me.
After that I will be prepared
to take on Mr. Townsend or
anyone of his ilk who voted to
seat Julian Bond.”
