The Seres (Chinese) send to Rome the
fleecy Roman product of their forests ... all that a
lady may exhibit her charms in trans
parent gauze. —Pliny the Elder
In 8 A.D., i popular Confudan scholar^
Wang seized Mang, the regent to the 4-year-old emperor,
throne of China, proclaimed a new
dynasty and launched a sweeping program of
reforms.
He nationalized the land and ordered that
the great estates be broken up and given to
those who tilled them. He freed thousands of
slaves, advanced low-interest loans to farmers
and small businessmen and nationalized the
chief industries.
But Wang Mang had attempted too much

No Down Payments — Months To Pay
15 years, the nation rebelled, Wang Mang
was killed and the Han dynasty reinstated.
The civilized world at this time was divided
between two great empires in their heydays
—China in the East and Rome in the West.
Though they had no diplomatic contact, the
Silk Road across Asia brought vast quantities
of that coveted fabric to Rome.
While the historian Pliny may have been
mistaken about how the “Seres”—the Silk
People—made old fogey about silk feminine and was fashions, somewhat of an
he was
right when he pointed with alarm to the huge
sums that “luxury and the female sex cost us.”
Many millions in Roman gold drained into the
pockets of middlemen along the Silk Road
over the decades. Thus little silkworms may
actually have contributed to the decline and
fall of the mighty Roman Empire.
Before that, however, decay again infected
“Men have died to raise the
flag which you have lowered
disrespectfully and caused to
be defaced and defiled,” Horne
told the youthful defendant.
Hinton, a Negro, was among
200 persons who staged a rau
cous racial demonstration at
the Crisp County courthouse
March 31 and ripped the state
flag and Old Glory from their
lanyards.
The throng of mostly Negro
demonstrators passed the Btars
and Stripes among themselves,
ripping it in several places.
A jury of 10 white men and
two Negroes found Hinton guilty
of charges of defacing and de
filing both banners.
The young Negro told the
court that he lowered the flags
because he felt that conditions
in the Negro section of town
warranted putting the entire
town in mourning.
His attorney, C. B. King, told
Horne “I am not satisifled at
all with the way this trial went
or with the verdict.” ,
The judge denied his request
that Hinton be placed on proba
tion because he had no prev
ious offenses.

to be assassinated.
The corruption and cruelty of the eunuchs
resulted in a general massacre of “the beard
less ones” by the military in 189 A.D. and
signalled the start of a period of civil war.
The Han dynasty finally ground to an end
in 220 A.D. Yet so glorious had it been that
Chinese long afterwards were to call them

—its gift of paper to the World—it would de

with the best K telephone service
to the nation> says w . f. Myers,
local manager for Southern Bell.
For the past several weeks
Barnesville has been full of tele
phone folk and green cars and
trucks bustling around town get
ting the new phones working pro
perly and instructing everyone
on dialing local and long distan
ce calls.
Myers said the new dial eq
uipment practically is error
proof but unless the people using
the telephones are thoroughly
familiar with the dialing proce
dure they will either get the
wrong number or no number
when they dial.
“Your new telephone directory
delivered this week contains all
new numbers that you will begin
dialing on Sunday morning. May
15, 1966,” Myers said. Myers
asked that subscribers us e the
old numbers through Satur
day night, May 14.
In addition to the inauguration
of local dial service, Barnesville
joins the direct distance dialing
network that spans the nation
and some foreign countries.
This means that one can dial
long distance statiocrto-station
calls just as easy as a local call.

WASHINGTON (UPI) —FBI
J. Edgar Hoover
his 42nd year on the
today with no comment on
the anniversary, no change in
work routine, and no talk
ot eventual retirement.
At 71 —One year past the
mandatory retirement age for
government employes —Hoover
still arrives at his desk early
and leaves late.
But he is, if anything, more
shy of the limelight. In the last
year he has made only four
formal public appearances. One
of these was to testify before a
House appropriations subcom
mittee considering the FBI
budget request.
As for his anniversary, a
spokesman said Hoover had
told him it will just be another
workday with no soecial
observance.
But if he is seldom seen in
public, Hoover is often seen in
private. A steady stream of
visitors file through his office
on the fifth floor of the Justice
