A report of a new world’s re
cord largemouth bass being cau
ght to Lake Lanier has been dis
counted by the State Game and
Fish Commission.
Two fisheries biologists of the
Commission said that the head
of a fish obtained from a Cum
mtog man definitely was not that
of a largemouth bass. The bio
logists didn't want to make a
positive identification of exact
ly what species the fish actually
was without seeing the rest of
its body, but they did say that
the head resembled that a red
grouper, which is s saltwater
fish.
Lake Lanier is a fresh water
lake, located more than 300 mil
es from the season. Even if a
saltwater fish could have been
transported that far alive, the
Commission biologists say that
it would have died immediately
if placed in freshwater.
Hie fish reportedly was caught
on a spring lizard in Lake Lanier

Record Bass Catch
ge Marina. The fisherman said
that the fish weighted 22 pounds
and nine ounces — five ounces
more than the official world’s
record largemouth bass, caught
to 1832 by George Perry of
Brunswick.
The massive fish head turned
over to the Game and Fish Com
mission weighs five pounds by
itself. The decomposed head is
being held by the Commission
for further study at the State
Capitol.
The Commission has been un
able to find a photograph of the
entire fish or any witnesses to
the weighing of the fish, which
reportedly was eaten by the fis
herman that night.
A 17 pound, nine ounce large
mouth bass was caught in Lake
Lanier last December by Emory
Dunahoo of Gainesville. Duna*
hoo's fish lost out as the second
largest bass ever caught in Ge
orgia to a 17 pound, 14 ounce
bass caught in July of last year
by Nickl Rich of Marietta in
Chastain’s Lake.
