Majors Cut
Covington Axed
By Chicago Cubs
By United Press International
Wes Covington, once dubbed
the "new Hank Aaron” and a
hero of Milwaukee’s only World
Series championship, apoarent
ly has reached the end of his
10-year major league career.
The power-hitting outfielder,
who took a career batting
average of .285 into the 1966
season, was unable to hand on
with the last-place Chicago
Cubs and was given his outright
release Wednesday. H® had
only one hit in 11 times at bat
this year.
Covington was just one of the
casualties of baseball's final
spring cleaning. All major
league clubs had to pare their
roster to 25 players by
midnight Wednesday.
Shines In Series
Covington started the 1957
season at Wichita, but was
brought back by the Braves
and starred in their run for the
National League pennant, bat
ting .284 with 21 homers in 96
games. He shone defensivaly as
well In the 1957 World Series
when Milwaukee beat the New
York Yankees.
Covington eventually olayed
with the Phillies, White Sox,
Athletics and Phillies before his
final fling with the Cubs.
Tom Cheney, who holds the
all-time record for strikeouts in
a single game with 21 in a 16
inning affair, was another to be
chopped at cutdown date. He
was dropped by the Washington
Senators after a vain comeback
attempt following arm troubles,

HITTING THE DIRT—-If it weren’t for the bats, Tony Oliva of the Minnesota Twins (left) and Lenny Green of the
Boston Red Sox might look like they’re sliding voluntarily into home plate. Actually, they’re biting the dust from
pitches which buzzed by their scalps.
