LBJ Jigsaw Puzzle
Latest Souvenir
By MERRIMAN SMITH
UPI White Bouse Reporter
WASHINGTON (UPI) —Back
stairs at the White House:
Latest souvenir item on sale
near President Johnson’s ranch
in Texas is the “LBJ jigsaw
puzzle” which only confirms
what his political opponents
have been saying for a long
time —that he can be quite a
puzzle.
The puzzle is sold in Johnson
City where other available
souvenirs include LBJ playing
cards at $2.95 a pack. The
cards carry a handsome
drawing of the President’s
ranch home and a small picture
of him. This deck could be
quite a disconcerting element if
slipped slyly into a Republican
poker game.
Members of the President’s
Club in New York made up of
party contributors of $1,000 or
more have been advised that
journalists may not be among
their guests at a dinner for the
President next month —not
even for members who have
contributed several times
$1,000. v
The reason for this is that
these dinners, wherever they
are held, are supposed to be
relatively intimate affairs at
which one of the chief drawing
cards is the prospect of
Johnson taking down h»« hair
and talking politics in gusty,
frank terms.
The dialogue usually is
nothing startling or new, but
more in the nature of a rousing
pep talk. Most of it could be
entirely on the record without
shaking up the world of
journalism and broadcasting.
But this would destroy the
clubby, intimate atmosphere of
the dinners and thus make
them less attractive to the
$1,000 set. |
And speaking of fund-raising
dinners, the Republicans are
preparing for a mammoth
affair in Washington shortly at
which such GOP leaders as
Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower
and Richard M. Nixon will be
drawing cards for the faithful
who will be asked to pay $500 a
couple. By cutting prices, the
question naturally arises* At
$250 a plate, are the Republi
cans trying to establish a
common man image for their
party?

Geer Asked
To Become
Republican
ATLANTA (UPI) — Lt. Gov.
Peter Zack Geer, an avowed
conservative, has been asked to
become a Republican. However,
Geer said “it was no formal in
vitation.”
Geer admitted Wednesday
that he had been asked to de
sert the Democratic Party but
he declined to say who made
the offer, when it was made or
even if it was a serious one.
The lieutenant governor re
sponded when confronted by
newsmen concerning a state
met he made at a Young
Democrats meeting. At the
meeting Geer described himself
as the only high Democratic of
ficeholder who had been asked
to join the GOP.
“It was no formal Invitation,
Geer said. “I never sat down
and had any discussion with the
Republicans.”

MH Director Asks
Sanders To Call
Special Session
By DON PHILLIPS
United Press International
ATLANTA (UPI)—Ben Mos
ley, executive director of the
Georgia Association for Mental
Health, has again asked that
Gov. Carl Sanders call a spe
cial legislative session on men
tal health but Sanders is stand
ing firm in opposition to such
a session.
Mosley said Wednesday
at the current time “all our
needs cannot be met.”
“If a special session is not
called we must wait until the
next legislature in January for
more money,” Mosley said.
“This is wasted time that could
be used to bring mental health
up to a higher level.”
Sanders, speaking to a con
of the Georgia Munici
Association Wednesday, said
that all state departments have
enough money to operate ef
ficiently through the end of the
year and a special legislative
spending session would amount
to a raid on the state treasury.
“I’m not looking forward to
any extraordinary session of
the legislature,” Sanders said.
The governor recommended
that municipalities levy more
taxes for local needs rather
than rely on the state or the
federal government to finance
their operations.
Sanders said Tuesday he
would not call a special session
but if one were ordered by the
U. S. Supreme Court to reap
portion the legislature, he would
place mental health at the head
of the list.
The governor praised the re-
port Tuesday of the Governor’s
Commission for Efficiency and
Improvement in Government
which urged a number of im
provements in the operation of
Milledgeville State Hospital. In
cluded was a recommendation
for salary boosts to relieve “de
plorable” staff shortages. How
ever, Sanders said he saw no
necessity for a special session
now.
Mosley said he would not
criticize Sanders for his stand.
He said he would meet with the
governor in the next few weeks
to urge him to change his mind.
The Mental Health Associa
tion has been calling for a spe
cial session to use some of the
$120 million surplus which, it
has been estimated, will end
the fiscal year June 30.
