Strickland’s Pitching, Hinson’s
Triple Give Griffin Championship
Frank Hinson, has had as
much trouble with the bat this
year as the Braves’ Eddie Mat
hews.
Frank would be the first to ad
mit that most pitchers, becau
se of his .170 or so average,
consider him harmless even
with a white ash club In his
hand.
But the Griffin left fielder
made up for all times he didn't
get hits with one big blow Thurs
day at Ted Wright Field in Jo
nesboro.
Hinson tripled in two runs in
the top of the 12th to give Grif
fin a 2-0 victory and the 4-AAA
South championship.
Frank’s three-bagger broke up
a tremendous scoreless duel
between Griffin’s Ken Strickland
and Jonesboros David Turner.

Just about everybody agreed
it was one of the best pitched
games they’d seen in a long
time.
Strickland was at his best. He
allowed only three hits,
out 13 and walked three.
Turner was almost as effec
tive. He gave up four hits, fan
ned nine and walked five.
Strickland was nearly as st
rong as the finish as when he
started. Five of his 13 strikeouts
came in the last three innings.
Turner had retired the last 12
men he faced when Tommy Lyn
ch led off the disastrous 12th
with a walk.
Strickland sacrificed Lynch to
second.
Donnie Cobb strukout.
Larry “Smokey” Fields, Grif
fins leading hitter, laced a
sharp drive that Jonesboros fir
st sacker made a fine play on.
However, he didn’t get the out
and the blast went for an infield
single.
Fields stole second on the first
pitch to Hinson.
Hinson then looped a drive in
to short left field. A1 Oxford
made a sensational attempt to
catch the ball on the fly. But
his shoestring stab missed and
the ball rolled far behind him.
By the time he retrieved it,
two runs had scored and Hinson
Friday, May 13, 1966
was on third. and Hinson had Griffins only
Cobb, Charles Reeves, Fields I hits.
