Editorial Roundup
A Shelter
For Criminals II
Once again the Unites States Supreme Court has
thrown its protective shield around suspects in criminal
cases, revising and extending the concept of the Fifth
Amendment ban against self incrimination.
From now on, as a result of this sweeipng 5 to 4 deci
sion, no confession may be used in evidence unless the
suspect is questioned in the presence of counsel.
Even when confession is fully free and voluntary, the
presecution must prove it complied with a long list of
safeguards for the defendant’s rights.
Protection for the accused against self incrimination
is a basic principle of American law. But what about the
basic right of decent citizens to protection against the ris
ing tide of voilence and crime?
Here is editorial comment on the court’s decision:
EXAMINER, San Francisco — “We do not see how
the long-range consequence of the decisions can be any
thing hut a further increase of crime, brought about be
cause of police inability to do their job whQe locked in
this Court-imposed traitjacket. Moreover, police depart
ments everywhere will have to be enlarged because their
task of solving crime has been made more difficult.”
TENNESSEAN, Nashville, Tenn. —- “There is going
to have to be improvement in policing, in prosecution
methods and criminal jurisprudence. It is mandatory now
that communities have better-educated, better-trained
and better-paid police. Though perhaps an unpopular
and controversial decision, the Court’s opinion may well
result in long-range strengthening of law enforcement
throughout the country while protecting the basic rights
of every citizen.”
TIMES-DISPATCH, Richmond, Va. — “Justice White
believes that ‘a good many criminal defendants, who
otherwise would have been convicted ...» will now,
under this new version of the Fifth Amendment, either
not be tried at all or acquitted. . .’
“What will the nation’s highest court do next? How
far will it go in adding weight to the criminals’ side of the
scales and ignoring the need for counterbalancing them in
society’s behalf?”
NEWS, Charlotte, N. C. —• “All we can make of the
Supreme Court decision is that the court is padding along
after doctrinal freedoms that can never he absolute, in
total disregard of the real world in which the rest of us
have to live.”
COMMERCIAL APPEAL, Memphis, Tenn. — “In
exceptional instances, local police have not safeguarded
the individual rights of the arrested. But for the Supreme
Court to make this an excuse for a blanket indictment of
law enforcement, and to undermine the right of police to
question a suspect, is to erode all that the law stands for.
“In sum, the high court has made it possible for any
suspect picked up by police to refuse to be questioned.
Indeed, the police have to carefully warn him of his right
to refuse to talk. Police have been cast in the role of pro
tector of the arrested rather than of the victim of a
crime.”
BLADE, Toledo, Ohio — “When some of the steam
has blown off about the court’s latest ruling, however,
and some of the policemen and prosecutors who prefer
to take shortcuts in their work have stopped lamenting,
we believe that it should apparent that the court has
carried to a logical conclusion what must be done ulti
mately to give effect to the Constitution when it says that
‘no person . . . shall be compelled in any criminal case
to he a witness against himself’ and that ‘the accused
shall ... have the assistance of counsel.’ ”
NEWSDAY, Garden City, Long Island — “The court
in closing one door to protect the innocent has opened
another door to escape for the guilty.”
MORNING NEWS, Dallas, Tex. — “Police investiga
tory techniques and our judicial process are designed for
one purpose—to uncover the truth. The Supreme Court
has severely limited our ability to arrive at the truth in
many criminal matters. Its decision will do much to pro
tect the guilty, little to protect society.”
INQUIRER, Philadelphia, Pa. — “Certainly, no arrest
ed person should be deprived of any right guaranteed him
by the Constitution. At the same time, it would be a pity,
at a time of increased lawlessness, if more attention is
given the rights of lawbreakers than the rights of the
public to have effective police protection.”
FREE PRESS, Detroit, Mich. — “The decision doesn’t
mean, as some of its detractors have said, that a lawyer
must ride in the backseat of the patrol car. But it does
mean that policemen must become more expert on the
law. They must be better trained, better qualified and
better paid.”
STAR, Washington, D. C. — “Without doubt it is a
ruling which will grievously handicap the police and
make it easier for a criminal to beat the rap.”

God’s Creation
I was reared to believe that
sex is a sin, bnt my husband has
succeeded in can vicing me
that sex is not sinful. If I turn
to Christ, must I give sex np?
M.T.
In the first chapter of the Bi
ble it says: “Male and female
created he them. And God bless
ed them, and said unto them;
Be fruitfu and multiply." (Gen.
1:28)
Sex Is God’s creation. It Is that
mysterious life force which at
tracts the opposite sexes. God
gave it to us; He blessed it, and
It is the basis of family life.
However, when It Is practic
ed out of wedlock, and for pur
poses of lust and pleasure only,
God has pronounced Judgment
upon it. The reason: sex is for
the married — for those whose
union has been vouch-safed and
blessed by God.
Your husband is right, and you
have had the wrong impression.
However, even in the context of
marriage, sex is to be practiced
w’"i love and unselfishness. Tur
ning to Christ, therefore, will
make you even more understan
ding, considerate, and affection
ate. The married relationship
far from being harmed by being
a Christian, is enhanced and
helped. In fact, it is the Ideal
marriage relationsl.ip. The Bible
teaches that for the married
“th» bed is undefiled.”

PRAYER: Heavenly Father,
help us through this day to be
ever mindful of Thy love and
care. We thank Thee for our
many blessings. Help us to re
cognize Thy will in our lives. We
beseech Thee to guide us that
we may help others know Thee
better. In Jesus’ spirit. Amen.
