Gators In Danger Of
Losing Favorites’ Role
By DAVID M. MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI)—The ninth
ranked Florida Gators are in
danger of dropping from the
favorite’s role to near elimina
tion in the Southeastern Confer
ence basketball race in less than
a week.
The villain in the Gators mel
odrama is defensive - minded
Tennessee which upset them 66-
53 Monday night at Gainesville,
Fla., and hosts them In a re
turn match Saturday night at
Knoxville, Tenn.
With lOth-ranked Vanderbilt,
19th - ranked Mississippi State
and unranked and obviously un
derrated Tennessee all having
suffered only one loss In SEC
play, the Gators, 6-2 in league
action, simply can’t afford to
lose again to Tennessee.
The Vols, paced by 6-foot-
4 Ron Widby who has the best
scoring average (23.9) in the
conference, are third in the
league at 4-1 and 8-3 over-all.
Vanderbilt leads the SEC with
a 6-1 mark and is 13-2 over-all
while Mississippi State is sec
ond at 5-1 and 11-1.
Other Leaders Idle
Mississippi State, which took
>«* ■«* « Florida, wffl be
idle until Jan. 23 when the Bull
dogs go to Alabama. Vanderbilt,
at Auburn last month,
doesn’t return to action until
28 when the Commodores
host Mississippi State.
Thus the spotlight is on the
- Florida game. The
only other league action is at
Lexington, Ky., where the fad
ing defending champion Ken
tucky Wildcats will host Auburn
in the weekly regional television
game.
The only mid - week action
finds high-scoring Miami (Fla.)
host to Florida Southern to
night. Saturday, Georgia will be
at Georgia Tech, Alabama vs.
Samford at Birmingham and
Memphis State, the nation’s No.
Fairmont Girls,
Boys Win Games
The Fairmont High girls ran
their record to 8-1 Wednesday
night by beating Ethel Kite
High of LaGrange 64-37.
The Bears won their fifth
game. 69-39.
Elizabeth Frazier scored 34
points for the Fairmont girls.
Hazel Ison had 14.
Fletcher Berry was high scor
er for the Bears with 16. Fre
derick Parks made 14.
Fairmont will host East De
pot High of LaGrange Friday
night.

Accent On Defense
For AFL All-Stars
OAKLAND, Calif. (UPI) —
The accent shifted to defense
today in the training camps of
the American Football League’s
East and West All Star teams
but there didn’t seem much
chance of checking a wide-open
contest when they clash for the
fifth time Saturday.
Coaches Mike Holovak of the
East and Johnny Rauch of the
West said after Wednesday’s
1 defensive team, at Xavier of
Ohio.
Tennessee, which has allowed
an average of only 56 points per
game, simply out - defensed
Florida in their first meeting.
The Vols held the Gators’ top
scorer, 6-foot-9 Gary Keller, to
13 points and Florida’s two 6
foot-10 men, Neal Walk and Jeff
Ramsey, to 8 and 2 points re
spectively.
Vols Have 7-Footer
Seven - foot Tom Boerwinkle
gives the Vols a backboard
weapon which other opponents
have not had against the tow
ering Gators. The presence of
Boerwinkle and Widby plus the
home court where Tennessee
has won 16 straight over two
seasons suggests the Vols will
make it two straight in a single
week against the Gators.
The decline of Kentucky,
which has lost all four SEC
games and is 5-7 over-all for its
worst showing in 40 years, has
turned this season's league race
into one of Its best.
The race Is still wide open
with Mississippi State having
five games left with the other
three contenders, Vanderbilt
and Tennessee four and Florida
three
