Sanders Balks
On Squabble
Over Funds Cut
ATLANTA (UPI) — Former
Gov. Carl Sanders Isn't going
to get Into any dispute over the
$14 million In education funds
lopped off his last budget pro
posal by Gov. Lester Maddox.
“I’m not going to get In
volved In that,” Sanders snap
ped to newsmen after making
a speech Thursday night.
He said he would "personal
ly resent” anyone trying to get
him embroiled in an argument
with Maddox or the legislature
over the 1967-69 budget.
Sanders recommended $20
million for a program to attrace
top faculty members to the
state and Maddox slashed It In
half. Maddox said the latest
economic forecasts made him
do it.
Insists Budget was Sound
Sanders Insisted his entire
budget was sound based on
available Information in October
but conceded economic factors
could have changed In the next
couple months to force reduc
tions.
The former governor said his
budget was not based on a tax
Increase. Maddox has prom
ised no new taxes the next two
years.
Sanders, in his speech during
a testimonial for retiring resi
dent O. C. Aderhold of the Uni
versity of Georgia said the pro
gram for higher education
should be the “No. 1 priority.”
He called on the General
Assembly and all concerned to
“stand with the university sys
tem to see they get all they
need."
But the former governor said
later this remark should not be
construed as an attempt to tell
the assembly to restore the $10
million Maddox has cut. Mem
bers of the Board of Regents,
unsuccessful in getting Maddox
to change hi3 mind, vowed to
taka their fight to the legisla
ture.
Sanders praised Aderhold for
his leadership in education dur
ing his 17 years as president of
the University of Georgia. San
ders sold Aderhold did more
than anyone else to keep the
university open during the 1961
integration crisis.
*T know some of the trials
and tribulations this great
Georgian withstood” 6aid San
ders, who was a state senator
at the time.
"He stood in the breach,”
Sanders said, ‘‘to roll back the
tide that wa3 moving against
him."
The legislature had author
ized Gov. Ernest Vandiver to
close any integrated school and
great pressure was put on him
to close the university. Howev
er, Vandiver decided to keep it
open.
Sanders said the university
was at its lowest point during
the crisis because good facul
ty members and students were
leaving the state rather than
face the anticiated turmoil.
But once the school weath
ered the storm, Sanders said,
the university through Ader
bold’s leadership progressed
more rapidly than ever before.
Aderhold was honored at a
banquet sonsored by the Ful
ton County Alumni Association.
