Winter
Slashes
Coasts
By United Press International
A storm centered miles out In
the Pacific Ocean battered the
northwest coast with gale-force
winds today. At the opposite
end of the nation, mid-Atlantic
states coped with an eight-inch
snowfall
Cape Blanco on the Oregon
coast wsa battered Thursday
afternoon and night by winds
gusting to 93 miles an hour.
Gusts above 40 mph occurred
inland to the northern Rockies,
Metropolitan areas of Port
land reported damage to houses
and trees. The storm kept ships
waiting offshore. It was too
hazardous in port where the
ships could not maneuver.
Storm Warnings Up
Gale warnings flew along the
Washington and Oregon coasts
south to Point St. George, Calif.
A snow storm spun off the
system which produced record
cold for two days in the
northeastern third of the nation
and unloaded heavy snow on the
District of Columbia, Tennes
see, North Carolina and Virgi
nia Thursday.
Salisbury, Md., reported the
deepest snow cover, eight
inches, and 4 to 6 inches
covered a belt stretching from
western Tennessee to ^
Atlantic.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk
cancelled a trip to the Atlantic
fleet headquarters at Norfolk,
Va., because of the storm. A
United Air Lines prop-jet with
50 persons aboard crashed into
a snow tractor while landing at
Norfolk. The tractor operator
was temporarily trapped In his
vehicle and was Injured.
Cold Wave Ending
North of the snowbelt, what
experts predicted was the tail
end of the winter’s worst cold
wave held sway. The mercury
slid to an unofficial 35 below
zero at the ranger station at
Wanakena, N.Y.
The Midwest, Jack Frost's
whipping boy since the start of
the week, got a little relief from
the cold Thursday with more
relief slated for today.
Even if residents who had
survived 40-50 degree below
temperatures felt a hint of
spring and began shedding
layers of their outdoor clothing,
the weather was still cold by
most standards.
Early today International
Falls, Minn., reported 16 below.
Temperatures in the teens and
20s were common as far south
as the Ohio River Valley and
across to the East Coast.
