President Hails
Gulton
W. C. Mitchell, president of
Eouthern States, Inc. announced
that merger negotiations were
under way with Gulton Indus
tries of Metuchen, New Jersey.
President Mitchell has confir
med that these negotiations have
been finalized and Southern Sta
tes is now a subsidiary of Gul
ton Industries.
Mr. Mitchell pointed out that
the new alliance could have far
teaching implications for many
people in the Henry-Spalding Co
unty area. According to him,

many levels in the industrial

ed that the merger can only

Rev. Walker To
Have Breakfast
At White House
The Rev. Alastair Walker, pas
tor of the First Baptist Church,
Griffin, is participating in a
“Christian Leadership Work
shop”, in Washington, D. C. this
week. According to Melvin Brad
ley, Minister of Education at
the church, the Rev. Walker will
participate in the workshop on
Wednesday with legislators and
religious leaders from the 50
states.
On Thursday morning, Mr.
Walker will attend the presi
dential prayer brakfast at the
White House. This event will be
attended by legislators and re
ligious leaders, Including Billy
Graham.
The Rev. and Mrs. Walker left
Griffin Sunday and will return
this Saturday.

Ralph Joiner of Atlanta has
been named national sales man
ager for The Public Relations
Institute, a division of Good Will
Publishers, Inc.
Mr. Joiner, 48, joined Good Will
Publishers in February 1965 and
has been based in Atlanta since
then.
For 12 years, 1952 to 1964, Mr.
Joiner was with the U. S. Cham
ber of Commerce in Washing
ton, D. C. Prior to that he was
in organizational and manage
ment work in Charlotte, N.C.,
New York City and Syracuse,
New York.
In 1964, as an active Baptist
layman, Mr. Joiner served for
seven months as Associate Dir
ector of Development for Tift
College, Georgia.
Ralph and his wife, Elizabeth
(Lib), reside at 4520 Jolyn Place,
N.E., in Atlanta with their 13
year-old son, Bob. Another son,
Ralph, Jr., is now a sophomore
at Georgia State. The Joiners’
daughter, Beth, a recent college
graduate, now teaches music in
the Atlanta public school system.
Beth is also organist and choir
director at Brookhaven
dist Church.
The Joiners attend church
Wieuca Road Baptist.
Joiner is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. W. J. Joiner of Griffin, Ga.
His wife is the daughter of Mr.
and Judson B. Taylor, also of
Griffin.
Four Alarms
By Firemen Monday
The Griffin Fire Department
reported answering four alarms
on Monday. No damage was re
ported in three of the fires.
At 12:15 p.m. firemen were
called to the 500 block of Exper
iment street to a grass fire.
Cause was unknown.
Firemen were called to 1109
North Hill street at 5 p.m. to ex
tinguish an automobile fire. Cau
se was unknown and heavy da
mage to the automobile was re
ported.
A grass fire was reported at
610 Melrose avenue at 5:30 p.m.
There was no damage. A call at
p.m. to a tree fire at 1315
Meriwether street was investi
gated and firemen reported no
damage.

Revival Begins
Wednesday In
McDonough
A revival will begin Wednes
day night, February 1-5, at the
McDonough Church of God. Ser
vices will begin each night at
7:30 p.m.
The Rev. Robert W. Presley
will preach. Johnny Phillips and
the Gospel trio will sing at ser
vices on Saturday night.

$5,000 Taken
In Robbery
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (UPI)
— Authorities were continuing
their search today for an armed
bandit who took an estimated
$5,000 from the Brainerd branch
of Chattanooga Federal Savings
and Loan Association Monday
afternoon.
Bank manager Richard Buf
fington said the man entered
the bank, raised his dark blue
jacket and exposed a .45 cali
ber automatic pistol tucked in
his belt.
Buffington said the man was
nervous and “he kept telling
me to hurry, hurry.”
Accident Victim
Dies Of Injuries
Carter Smith, 51, of Barnes
ville died of injuries Monday
suffered in a collision at Milner
on U. S. Highway 41.
State Troopers at Griffin said
he pulled into the path of a small
grocery truck. A tractor-trailer
just missed the Smith vehicle
before the collision, troopers
said.
The man was rushed to an At
lanta hospital after the mis
hap. There were no other injur
ies.
Mission Seminar
Planned At
Emory Feb. 10-12
Tlie Wesleyan Service Guild
will present a series of mission
seminars to provide opportuni
ties for Methodist women to bro
aden their concepts and deepen
their concern for the Mission of
the Church. Seven weekend mis
sion seminars are being sche
duled through the United States
in areas where there are pro
grams and projects related to
the National Division of the Me
thodist Board of Missions. One
of these will be held in Atlanta,
at Emory School of Nursing,
Feb. 10-12.

weekend. This includes a two
dollar registration fee. Guilders
who cannot spend the entire
weekend are invited to a panel
discussion at 7 p.m. Saturday
evening, at Glenn Memorial Fel
lowship Hall. Panelists are lea
ders of the Women’s Division
who have had a part in develop
ing the School of Nursing as a
project of the Board of Missions.
