“Just one?” she asked.
“Well, there’s a blank space
on that one,” the governor
pointed out.
"I’ll talk to you on the plane

told his wife.
Mrs. Maddox, who com

that she didn’t get to see her

WINTER PARK, Fla. (UPI)
— Some 500 newsmen, visitors
and officials will battle tight
deadlines and stiff rules today
to get a look at a Disney-built
city that is to be plunked down
in the middle of Florida.
The doors of the Park West
Theater here are scheduled to
close precisely at 1:45 p.m., and
officials have issued stern
warnings that anybody who is
late won’t get in at all. To get
in, even on time, special tickets
will be needed.
Fifteen minutes after the
ators in Washington.” he said.
The governor had a warm
greeting for five Negro school
girls from Atlanta, who said
“We just want to see our new
governor.”
“Do your best over at that
school hous e,’’ Maddox told
them. “Get some good report
cards.”
John Oxford, representing the
Atlanta Federation of the Blind
came to urge Maddox to help
provide home teachers for the
blind.
“Put your words into action,”
said Oxford, who was blinded in
World War II. Maddox prom
ised to do what he could.
Maddox told a visitor from
Boston, Mass., that "I received
one of the warmest receptions
anywhere in this country in
Boston. Welcome to Georgia.”
A couple from Liberty County
came to see him and got an
invitation to "come on over to
the mansion for a visit.”

diplomatic moves by North
Vietnam are leading some high
American officials to believe
the Hanoi government may be
edging slowly toward peace
talks with the United States.
Officials said today that
during the past few days Hanoi
'has asked a number of other
countries—Communist and non
Communist—to call Washing
ton’s attention to its recent
statements that “there could be
talks” if the United States
stopped bombing North Viet
nam.
Administration officials em
phasized that there had been no
direct contact between the
United States and North Viet
nam. But several said they
would not be surprised if Hanoi
made an approach at some
secrecy-shrouded point such as
Rangoon. Foreign newsmen are
not allowed there and the local
press is completely under the
Burmese government’s thumb.
The problem facing President
Johnson and his top advisers
was to determine whether the
Communists were taking tenta
tive steps toward the conference
table, or simply trying to step
up international pressure on
America to stop the aerial
assaults.
The President may give some
indication of how he assesses
the prospects at his news
conference late today. It was
considered more likely, howev
er, that Johnson would refrain
from any specific statement of
his views, partly because of the
delicacy of the situation and
partly so as not to raise any
false hopes.
The Johnson news conference
was set for 3 p.m. EST.
The disclosure that Hanoi was
going to great lengths to get its
point across to the United
States came just after Secreta
ry of State Dean Rusk said it
was possible the turmoil in Red
China had given Hanoi “some
what more freedom” to move
toward a peaceful settlement.
He said the United States is
exploring that possibility.
Rusk said Wednesday he did
not contend that North Vietna
mese President Ho Chi Minh
took orders from Peking, but he
felt that Ho was “strongly
influenced by Peking and has
been for some time.”

DOCTORS IN DRAFT
WASHINGTON (UPI) — The
Army and Navy will draft 2,118
physicians and 111 osteopaths,
starting in July.
The Defense Department said
Monday that Selective Service
had been asked to provide the
doctors because not enough had
volunteered to be able to
replace men leaving service
after two years’ active duty.
The Air Force is meeting its
needs and will not participate in
the summer draft call.
