Louis On Clay:
Million In Confidence,
Dime's Worth Of Courage
By DARRELL MACK
UPI Sports Writer
HOUSTON (UPI) — Former
heavyweight champion Joe
Louis labelled Cassius Clay as
“a guy with a million dollars
worth of confidence and a
dime’s worth of courage.”
Clay, obviously, disputes the
opinion of the once formidable
Erown Bomber, but admits his
courage never has been tested
in the ring. Ernie Terrell, the
World Boxing Association cham
pion, says he will test it
Monday night in their title fight
in the Astrodome.

New Basketball League
Hopes To Rival NBA
By GABY KALE
UPI Sports Writer
NEW YORK (UPI) —The
American Basketball Associa
tion, billed as the "Lively
League,” turned its full energy
today toward an October debut
for players and prestige.
Formation of the ABA Thurs
day w'as the culmination of
years of research designed to
avoid the pitfalls that killed
another pro circuit, the Ameri
can Basketball League. That
enterprise failed five years ago
in its efforts to provide suitable
competition for the established
National Basketball Association,
The new ABA is fancy-free
with its multi-million dollar
backing, a commissioner in the
person of former NBA star
George Mikan, and respectable
seating facilities to house the
10-team league.
ABA officials promise its
players “an unlimited future, a
modern pension plan and
unparalleled economic bene
fits.” None of these induce
ments is used for the purpose of
luring players from the NBA,
the ABA says.
Room For Expansion
The two-division alignment
envisioned by the ABA for the
start of play next fall calls for
New York, Pittsburgh, New
Orleans, Indianapolis and Min
neapolis to operate in the East,
while Kansas City, Oakland,

I'm not going to quit,”
Terrell said. “So if he don't
(quit), it’s going to be a helluva
fight.”
Although his courage is not
ring-tested, Clay said It has
been tested by his activities
outside the ring.
He did not mean the Army
and Vietnam and he never
intends lot it to be tested there.
Beliefs Tested
He said his beliefs have been
tested in every day life in such
areas as threats on his life
money and marriage.
“During the time before
Sonny Liston fight, Malcolm X’s
Anaheim, Houston and Dallas
forms the Western segment.
There Is room for expansion
and it is possible the ABA will
open with more than 10 teams
Mikan’s presence, as a
former player, coach and
general manager of Lakers
before they moved from Min
neapolis to Los Angeles, is
expected to provide the inspira
tion for a cohesive unit. He was
given a three-year contract
calling for a salary in excess of
$65,000.
Mikan said he does not intend
raiding the NBA for players,
but hoped “some big stars will
be in a position to come to us if
they are free.”
Dennis Murphy, a principal
owner of the Oakland franchise,
was one of Mikan’s biggest
backers for the commissioner’s
Job in the ABA.
Singer Backs Team
One of Murphy’s co-owners In
the Oakland enterprise is singer
Pat Boone, who is "enthusiastic
about the team.”
Arthur Kim is making his
second major pro basketball
venture as a principal owner of
the Anaheim club, Kim’s
previous experience w^as as
owner of the Hawaii Chiefs of
the defunct American Basket
ball League.
Anaheim will play its home
games in a new convention
center that will be completed in
April. Oakland’s team will see
action in a $30 million sports
coliseum complex that is a
combination of indoor and
outdoor facilities.

said. “My life was in danger
and I knew it, but I went on and
beat Liston.”
He said he was forced to
divorce his wife when her
actions and beliefs came in
conflict with his own.
He also said his perseverance
in following his Black Muslim
teachings to the letter had cost
him $3 million. He said he lost
$ 190,000 to his wife and a
$100,000 contract to Columbia
Records.
“I also turned down an acting

Two Team City
New York, the only city that
will contain two pro cage
teams, is dickering for the

He said he rejected all these
offers before the question came
up about his draft status. Then
he wanted to know why his
image is so bad just because he
practices what he believes."
Defends Rights
“In America, every man is
doing things to help other
people so they have the right to
believe as they want,” he said
“At the same time, the same
people dislike me because of my
beliefs. They go to another
country where they know
nothing about the beliefs and
die, both black and white, so
those people can have their
beliefs. But me, I’m an
American, they don’t even want
to give me the right to my
beliefs.
"I don’t drink, I don’t smoke,
I don’t chase women,” he said.
“I even run from women of
other races. I’m clean and I try
to clean up ancr educate my
people, is that wrong.”
Clay talked in his dressing
room after his most rugged
workout since he started
training Jan. 11. He went three
quick-paced rounds with 190
pound Jimmy Ellis and two
more tough rounds with 235
pound Mel Turnbow.
Terrell also had a rugged
sparring session—two rounds
with Slim Jim Robinson and one
round with Eddie Brooks.
Both men planned to box
today and work out lightly
