Was Dover, a self-appointed
physician, who “invented” a new
medicine, a combination of opium
and ipecac which wa ssold under
the name of Dover’s Powder
and, to the best of our knowl
edge, still sells today.
The powder had some value
in curing a variety of aches and
pains when used in moderation,
but Dover subscribed to the be
lief that if one grain is good,
two are better. In fact, some
of Dover’s dosages ranged from
a horrendous 60 to 100 grains.
As a result, opium which had
been in use for countless cen
turies . . . since the days of the
early Sumarians . , . fell large
ly into disuse because of Dover’s
Indiscriminate use of the drug.

Maddox said “The indus

been neglected all this year be
cause of mismanagement. They
haven’t put one red cent in
industrial advertising all this
fiscal year. That’s what I was
talking about during my cam
paign.”
A major shakeup developed
in the Industry and Trade De

fice and two different investiga
tions were launched when it
was learned the department had
incurred a $153,000 deficit.
State Auditor Ernest Davis
said the department was $140,

have to seriously curtail its
programs to make up the deficit
by the end of the fiscal year
on June 30.
The shakeup included the
resignations of director James
Nutter and Industry and Trade
Board Chairman Pete Knox. A
new director has not been
named. In addition several oth
er top employes resigned.
“It’s a shameful thing that’s
been going on down there, but
I think we are ready to start
moving forward," Maddox said.
