Stanky Involved In Two
Hassles In Spring
Training Camp Roundup
By VITO STELLINO
UPI Sports Writer
The Chicago White Sox camp
may not be like Stalag 17—but
spring training this year seems
like a baseball version of
“Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.”
It’s been a stormy spring with
players engaging in verbal
shootouts with each other—but
things hit a fever pitch Monday
and controversial White Sox
manager Ed Stanky got in
volved in two different hassles.
Stanky is starting early this
year but feuds are nothing new
to him. Last year the fiery
Stanky battled with players and
newspapermen all year along—
reaching a peak late in the year
when he said to one reporter, "I
won’t answer your questions
because you’re cheating on your
wife."
Stanky’s latest battles were
with St. Louis' John Romano,
who said he was glad the Sox
traded him because Stanky’s
camp was run like “Stalag 17,”

and venerable Casey Stengel,
who knocked Stanky’s new
pinch - hitter experiment for
making a "farce” out of the
game.
Stormy Spring
The two Stanky hassles are
the latest in a long line in what
has been a stormy spring.
Among the major incidents
were Willie Davis’ blast at
Maury Wills with a claim the
Dodgers are better off without
Wills; Joe Nuxhall’s censure of
Milt Pappas as a pitcher who
dogged it and Jim Coates’
designation of the entire Cincin
nati organization as “cheap.”
Stanky’s reaction was swift
when Romano labeled the White
Sox camp like “Stalag 17.”
“When he said that I wonder
if he forgot that I gave him four
complete days off in spring
camp last year,” Stanky
retorted.
Stanky also set a precedent
by revealing he fined Romano
$100 last summer for breaking
summer training rules.
Replying to Stengel’s charge,
he said, “I don’t make rules for
farces, no matter what any 75
year-old expert says.” Stengel
is actually 76.
Likes Idea
“I liked the idea years ago
and I would like it even if I
didn’t have Smoky Burguess
and I’ll like it 10 years from
now when I’m managing the
Sox without Burgess.”
Stanky took time out from his
hassles to manage the Sox to a
7-4 victory over the New York
Mets in one of the eight
exhibition games played Mon
day.
In other games, the Yankees
beat the Dodgers 7-6, Boston
edged Pittsburgh 4-3, Baltimore
topped Cincinnati 4-2, Detroit
beat Atlanta 5-4, California
whipped Cleveland 6-2, San
Francisco beat the Chicago
Cubs 9-6 and St. Louis turned

This Is Week That Wasn’t’
In NCAA
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (UPI) -
This has turned out to be the
week that wasn’t for the NCAA
basketball tournament.
This was supposed to be the
week of the buildup for the
college basketball game of the
year—UCLA vs. Louisville.
It looked like a natural clash,
the No. 1 team vs. the No. 2
team, Alcindor vs. Unseld—the
first real test for UCLA with
Louisville holding the home
court edge.
They were supposed to meet
this Friday night in the NCAA
semi-finals at Louisville’s Free
dom Hall.
But that all ended last Friday
night when Louisville, stale
from a long layoff and possibly
looking ahead to UCLA, was
upset by Southern Methodist In

Now wnen the four teams
converge on Louisville this

finals and Saturday’s finals, the
Cardinals of Louisville will be

Unseld and Butch Beard at the
start of the second semester.
Hard to Be a t
The question remains, howev
er, whether any of the three
survivors can give UCLA the
tough challenge that Louisville
was supposed to give the
Bruins.
Of course, UCLA will be here.
Coach John Wooden’s club will
come in with a 28-0 record.
The other three clubs are
Houston, survivor of the Mid
west regional with a 26-3
record; Dayton, survivor of the
Mideast regional with a 24-5
mark, and North Carolina,
survivor of the Eastern regional
with a 26-4 record.
It’ll be Houston vs. UCLA and
Dayton vs. North Carolina on
Friday night and the two
winners on Saturday night in a
nationally televised clash for
the national title.
Of the three clubs, North
Carolina, the third-ranked team,
seems to have the best chance
of giving UCLA a battle.
But the Tar Heels’ liability is
their 6-11 center Rusty Clark,
who doesn’t appear to have the
moves to keep up with Alcindor.

Bowling Record
ERIE, Pa. (UPI) — A total of
1,163 five-man teams tops the
list of record entries for the
Pennsylvania State bowling
tournament starting April 22.
The even has drawn 2,799
doubles teams, 5,598 singles,
and 5,119 all event competitors.
But what Clark may lack in
ability, he makes up for
desire. He’s looking forward
a shot at Big Lew.
“I remember looking at a

and the great winning streak
(71 straight) they had.
then I sort of began wishing
coul face him some day,”
Clark claims.
But Clark may not be too
happy after he actually gets the
chance to play Alcindor.

Illinois Begins
Search For Coaches
CHAMPAIGN, HI. (UPI) —
Preliminary screening was un
der way today to facilitate
selection of new football and
basketball coaches at the
University of Illinois.
The search began Monday
when school officials rebounded
from the resignations of football
coach Pete Elliott and basket
ball coaches Harry Combes and
Howie Braun as a result of the
penalty voted against the school
Big Ten.
However, Gene Vance, who
will take over as athletic
director April 1, was out of
town and thus only preliminary
steps could be taken in the
hunt.
The three coaches were
involved in the distribution of
excessive financial aid to
athletes from two “slugh funds”
of $21,000, resulting in an order
from Big Ten athletic directors
—upheld by the faculty—that
they must be discharged or the
school’s membership would be
suspended.
The {acuity ruled Saturday
that Elinois had failed to show
cause why the coaches should
not be dismissed and said the
school would be suspended

indefinitely. The resignation of
the coaches meant Illinois

The athletic board discussed
the selection of new coaches
briefly and ordered the search
to begin and “proceed as

to expedite the search on his
return next week.
