Baton Classes
For Children

partment director, Grady Mc
Calmon, that if sufficient inter
est was shown in a class for
girls four and five years old that
she would conduct one.
The class will be offered from
3:15 p.rn. until 4:00 p.m. each
Thursday afternoon. Registra
tion fee for the ten week class
will be $5.00 or 75 cents per
lesson. All girls must have an
approved Recreation Activity
Card.

zie Reeves McHargue, widow
of Mr. John Henry McHargue, of
Route one, The Rock, Ga., were
conducted this afternoon at 3 o’
clock from the Mt. Zion Baptist
Church at Piedmont, in Lamar
County. The Rev. Franklin Gib
sen and the Rev. Lynn Wood of
ficiated and burial was in the
c'lurch cemetery.
Mrs. McHargue is survived by
a daughter, Mrs. Jesse Black
man of The Rock, Ga.; three
sons, William H. McHargue of
Thomaston, Johnny McHargue

thur Roy McDaniel of 1211 Meri

ted Thursday afternoon at 2 o’
clock from the First Assembly
of God Church. The Rev. E. P.
Pruett and the Rev. L. B. Whet
stone will officiate and burial
will be in the New Hope Baptist
Church cemetery in Pike County.
Mr. McDaniel’s body is at
Haisten Funeral Home.
4-H’er Gives
Demonstration
On Wildlife
The sixth grade 4-H Club of
East Griffin School met in Mr.
Floyd’s room with the president,
Wendell Lindsey, in charge.
The 4-H pledge was given af
ter which Don Sloan gave the
devotional. Keith Huff led in se
veral songs. Dan Ridgeway, se
cretary, gave his report.
Wendell Lindsey gave a de
monstration on his wildlife pro
ject in observance of National
Wildlife Week.
Hal Tatum, assistant county
agent, gave a demonstration on
poultry.

Good Friday
Services At
St. George’s »
The congregations of all chur
ches are invited to participate
in the observance of Holy Week
at St. George’s Episcopal Chur
ch on Good Friday. A Three
Hour Service will begin at noon
and continue to 3:00 p.m. The
services recall in meditation,
prayer, and hymn the Seven
Last Words of Christ from the
Cross.
The last 30 to 40 minutes of the
three-hour period, beginning at
approximately 2:15, will be giv
en to the presentation of a sac
red cantata, “The Seven Last
Words -of Christ’’, music by
Theodore Dubois, by a choir
composed of several commun
ity churches under the direction
of Mrs. James Mankin with Mrs.
Paul Walker as organist.
Soloists will be Dr. Robert Fl
anders; Roger Lucas, New En
gland Conservatory, Boston; and
Mrs. James Mankin.
Griffin High
Glee Club
Visits Schools
The Griffin High Glee Club,
under the direction of Mrs. J. R.
Cumming, will present a pro
gram to the students of Fourth
Ward and Crescent Schools this
week.
The Glee Club sang for the
Third Ward and North Side Sc
hools last week.
Danny Clark, Billy Young and
Henry Harmon explained to the
students the activities of the cho
ral program in Junior High and
Griffin High Schools.
Mr. Gaffney
Buried Today
BARNESVILLE, Ga. — Mr.
John S. (Jack) Gaffney, 90, of 88
Thomaston street, Barnesville,
died early Tuesday.
He was a native of Amster
dam, N.Y., and was a retired
employe of the William Carter
Company. He served with the
company for 47 years as de
partment superintendent. Mr.
Gaffney had made his home in
Barnesville since 1923. He was a
member of the Sacred Heart Ca
tholic Church in Griffin.
He is survived by a sister,
Miss Bessie Gaffney of Barnes
ville; and a niece, Mrs. W. D.
Moore of Macon.
Graveside services were con
ducted this morning at 10 o’clo
ck from the Lamar Memorial
Gardens. The Rev. Father Ed
win Kelsch officiated. Haisten
Funeral Home of Barnesville
was In charge of plans.
Sgt. Moore, Jr.,
Killed In Viet
BARNESVILLE,Ga. — Staff
Sergeant Edward Lamar (Ned)
Moore, Jr., 28, of Barnesville,
was killed In action in Vietnam
on March 14.
Sgt. Moore was a member of
the First Methodist Church In
Barnesville. He was graduated
from Henry County High School
and West Georgia College In
Carrollton.
Survivors include his widow,
Mrs. Katharina H. Moore; three
daughters, Karolin Maryanne,
Judy Kay and Mary Diedra
Moore; his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Edward L. Moore, Sr.; a
brother, George F. Moore, all of
Barnesville; two sisters, Mrs.
Richard McBrayer and Mrs. Al
fred A. Moltrum of Cary, HI,;
and his grandmother, Mrs. Ja
mes T. Johnston.
Funeral plans will be announ
ced pending the arrival of the
body by Haisten Funeral Home
of Barnesville.

Henry Walker Bob Scroggins

Promoted At Dundee
John T. Newton, vice president
of manufacturing, announced to
day the promotion of J. Henry
Walker to general manager of
Dundee Mills and the advance
ment of Robert P. Scroggins
to superintendent of Dundee Mill
Plant Number One.
Mr. Walker, a native Griffin
ite and an active civic leader,
began his career with Dundee
in 1949 holding numerous posi
tions from this time. He is a gra
ducate of the University of Vir
ginia and Clemson University
where he was an outstanding
student and athlete.
Mr. Walker Is the immediate
past president of the United
Fund and has served as presid
ent of several civic organizations ;
including the Touchdown Club
Little League, Jaycees and the
Chamber of Commerce. He cur
rently is serving as the chair
man of Salvation Army Advi
sory Board, secretary of the
Griffin Rotary Club, and trea
surer of the First Baptist Chur
ch where he is a deacon, Sun
day School teacher, and presi
dent of the Men’s Brotherhood,
He is active ir L.t Boy Scout
program.
He is married to the former
Rebecca Roddenbery of Cairo J r
Ga., and they are the parents of
three children. They reside at
1214 Maple drive.
Mr. Scroggins, a native of Ope
lika, Ala., and an alumunus of
Auburn University, joined Dun
dee in 1960 and has also served
in various manufacturing de
partments, his latest being as
sistant superintendent of Nnm
Good Friday
Service At
First Baptist
A special Good Friday service
will be conducted at First Bap
tist Church from 12:15 to 12:45.
This half-hour worship period
will be directed by the pastor,
the Rev. Alastair C. Walker. Gu
est soloist will be Tom Fetzer.
Scheduled so that the business
and professional people of Grif
fin may attend, Rev. Walker will
preach on the subject: “It was a
Rugged Cross.”
A candlelight communion ser
vice will be observed at 7:30 In
the sanctuary. Deacons of the
church will serve the ordinan
ce. Miss Emily Brisendine will
sing. The pastor will offici
ate. A nursery will be provided
for small children.
Man Burned In
Fall On Stored
A Griffin man was burned
Tuesday when he suffered an
epileptic seizure and fell on a
stove.
James Edwards was admit
ted to the Griffin-Spalding Coun
ty Hospital where he is being
treated.

change Club, is past chairman
of the Industrial Division of the
United Fund and is an officer in
the Spalding District of the Boy
Scouts. He is a member of the
First Baptist Church where he
teaches Sunday School, a Jav
cee having held several offices,
arid an Elk.
Mr. Scroggins is married to
the former Patricia Wilson of
Fort Valley, Ga. and they re
side at 1140 Skyline drive.
Mr. Beam, 78,
Dies Today
Mr. William Asbury Beam, 78,
of the Old Mt. Zion road, Route
three, Griffin, died early today
at Brightmoor Nursing Home.
Mr. Beam had been ill for three
years after suffering a stroke.
A native of Mississippi, he has
resided here for 30 years and
until he retired he was employ
e d at Dundee Mills No. One.
Mr. Beam Is survived by his
widow, Sara Nancy Cole Beam;
three sons, Lawrence Beam, Le
thal Beam, both of Griffin, Nor
man Beam of New Orleans, La.;
three daughters, Mrs. Lydell
Pendley of Canton, Mrs. Merlin
Pitts of East Point, Mrs. Doro
thy Caras of Huntsville, Ala.;
27 grandchildren, 3 great-grand
children and several nieces and
nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’
clock from Haisten’s chapel. The
Rev. C. F. Speer will officiate
and burial will be In Oak Hill
cemetery. Mr. Beam’s body Is
at Haisten Funeral Home.

Dies In Jackson
JACKSON, Ga. — Dr. Mary
Jarrell Edwards of 304 West
Third street, Jackson, wife of
Malvern H. Edwards, died eai
ly this morning at the Sylvan
Grove Hospital. Dr. Bdwards
had been In feeble health for
four years and seriously 111 for
tlie past three weeks.
She was a retired medical doc
tor. A native of Henry County,
she was the daughter of the late
Joseph Allison Jarrell and the
late Mrs. Anna Wynn Jarrell.
Dr. Edwards was a member of
the First Baptist Church in Jack
son.
In addition to her husband,
she is survived by three sisters,
Mrs. Hester J. Fuqua of Jack
son, Mrs. Faith Jones of Deca
tur, Mrs. Allie Becker of Marion,
Ind.; and several nieces and nep
hews.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Thursday afternoon at 3
o’clock from the First Baptist
Church. The Rev. Robert Thomp

will appear in a program of sacred music at South
side Baptist Church, 1330 Zebulon road, on Friday
at 7:30 p. m. The pastor is the Rev. M. V. Enquist.
The team, a brass-vocal combination, includes:
trumpeters, Karl Keefer, Memphis, Tenn.; Keith
Kiser, Cleveland, Ohio; baritonist, John Reese,
Crooked Creek, Pa.; and accompanist, Dan Tilly,
