High School Pushed
UPI Education Specialist
Are today’s high schools
better than they were 10 years
ago? Dr. James Bryant Conant,
noted educator and president
emeritus of Harvard University
in a new book, “The Compre
hensive High School: a Second
Report to Interested Citizens,”
confirms his original conclu
sions which were released in
1959. “The comprehensive high
school is still the answer to the
needs of American public high
school education.”
John Gardner, Secretary of
Health, Education, and Welfare,
defined the comprehensive high
school as peculiarly American,
“It is called comprehensive
because it offers, under one

roof (or series of roofs),
secondary education for almost
all the high school age children
of one town or neighborhood. It
is responsible for educating the
boy who will be an atomic
scientist and the girl who will
marry at 18; the prospective
captain of a ship and the future
captain of industry.
It is responsible for educating
the bright and the not so brignt
children with different vocation
al and professional ambitions
and with various motivations.”
What did Dr. Conant find in
his study? The staffing In
certain courses such as English
is better than it was 10 years
ago. The situation in modern
foreign languages, mathema
tics, and natural sciences is
substantially better. Out of the
2,000 schools surveyed, calculus
Is now offered in 816 schools,
advanced math in 458, “new”
physics in 1,001, “new” biology
in 1,312, and “new” chemistry
in 962. And 1,290 of the schools
offer four years of a modem
foreign language.
There are only 516 of the 2,000
schools in which the English
teachers have 120 or less
students. In a vast number of
the schools the guidance coun
sellor load is over 250-300
students. This leaves much to
be desired.
Dr. Conant writes, “a com
prehensive high school should as
a minimum meet the following
five criteria:
“1. Provide instruction in
calculus.
“2. Provide instruction in a
modern foreign language for
four years.
“3. Arrange the schedule so
that a student may study in any
one year English, mathematics,
science, a foreign language,
social studies, physical educa
tion, art or music.
“4. Provide one or more
advanced placement courses.
“5. Have enough English
teachers so that ’the average
pupil load’ is 120 or less. (I
stand by my recommendation in
’the American High School
Today’ that the student load
should be no more than 100, as I
make clear later.)”
Why should an academically
talented student elect a wide
program? Dr. Conant states, “if
a start were not made toward
developing the potentialities of a
student in high school, many
doors would be closed. For
example, a high school graduate
who has had no exposure to
mathematics or science beyond
the 9th grade is going to be in
an impossible position if he
tries to elect courses in college
in those subjects. Without
realizing it, the advisers of such
a boy or girl have foreclosed in
high school further exploration
of whole areas of knowledge at
the college level. Careers in
engineering, science, and math
ematics become almost inacces
sible when the decision has been
made in high school to avoid
mathematics and science as
much as possible."
These courses should be
available, but not required of all
students, since “the essence of
a comprehensive school lies in
the principle of electives.’*
“As one examines the returns
from different schools and
different states, it becomes
apparent that the American
ideal of education opportunity is
far from being realized.” Dr.
Conant charges, “What emerges
is a challenge to each communi
ty and each state.”
One Of His Four
Wives Divorced
JAKARTA (UPI) —One of
ousted President Sukarno’s four
official wives has divorced him,
the official Indonesian news
agency Antara said today.
Harjati, who married Sukarno
three years ago, said her
divorce was valid last October
but announced only now to
“clear up the whole issue
because I am a woman.”
The 27-year-oid childless beau
ty gave no reason for the
divorce.
She told newsmen she hopes
Sukarno “with his remaining
wives will get more happiness
spiritually as w’ell as physical
ly.”
