Sun Study May Help
Battle Smog On Earth
By JOSEPH L. MYLER
United Press International
WASHINGTON (UPI> — The
United States is spending mil
lions on studies of the sun and
the ‘‘interplanetary medium.”
Why?
A not too far-fetched answer
might be: The better to combat
smog on earth. What’s the con
nection between what goes on
out there and conditions down
here?
Listen to Dr. Homer E. New
ell, associate administrator for
space science and applications
of the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA).
In testimony before the House
Space Committee this month
Newell said that to understand
‘‘our local environment” it is
necessary to investigate ‘‘our
space environment.”
‘‘The sun,” he noted, “'literal
ly controls the state and be
havior of the earth's atmo
sphere by transmitting prodi
gious quantities of energy to
earth through the interplanetary
medium.”
Consider the current state of
earth’s atmosphere. In the vi
cinity of most cities it is pretty
foul. From time to time smog
kills scores of citizens in Lon
don. New York, and elsewhere.
One solution of the smog

problem would be to stop burn
ing fuel for homes and industry,
stop driving automobiles, stop
everything that injects contami
nants into the atmosphere.
“But this solution,” Newell
said, “is simply not accept
able.”
“A better approach,” he sug
tested, ‘‘is to understand thor
oughly the behavior of our at
mosphere, and what our activi
ties do to it, so that we may de
vise ways of living and working
that leave our environment un
harmed.”
Man keeps pumping more and
more carbon dioxide into the air
with his industrial fires and in
ternal combustion engines. Car
bon dioxide absorbs heat radi
ated from the ground, thus
tending to increase the temper
ature at the earth’s surface.
A rise of a few degrees could
melt the polar ice caps, raise
the sea level, and inundate low
lying land masses “such as
Florida.” This melting also
would thicken the planet’s cloud
cover and result in greater
snowfalls over wide areas.
“This, Newell said, “could he
the start of the next great Ice
age.”
So it is up to man to find out
all he can about his environ
ment and how it behaves. He
must know more about the at
mosphere before he can clean
it up, attempt to control the
weather, abate lightning haz
ards, or tame the hurricane and
the tornado.
This is where space research
comes in. The sun drives the
earth’s atmosphere via the in
terplanetary medium.
With knowledge derived from
satellites and space probes,
Newell said, man will be “bet
ter able to cope with the prob
lems of living In the earth en
vironment.”
