Coach Lewis Laughs
At Upset Possibility
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (UPI)—
Houston coach Guy Lewis
laughed harder than anyone
Thursday at the possibility of
his Cougars upsetting top
ranked UCLA in the NCAA
basketball tournament semifin
als here tonight.
But you get the idea that the
affable Texan is the sly fox,
hoping to get everybody in the
right frame of mind for the
upset of the year against Lew
Alcindor and company.
The Cougars have their
chance in the second game at
Freedom Hall tonight, after
North Carolina (26-4) meets
surprising Dayton (24-5) in the
opening game at 7:30 p.m. EST.
UCLA (28-0) is an overwhelm
ing favorite to advance to the
finals Saturday night and win
its third NCAA crown in four
years. North Carolina is a solid
favorite over Dayton.
A sell-out crowd of 18,000-plus
will be on hand to ring down the
curtain on the 1966-67 college
basketball season that has been
dominated by UCLA and its 7
foot-1 superstar Alcindor.
“I don’t think Alcindor can be
defensed,” Lewis said during
one of his few serious moments
at a news conference Thursday.
“We have too much respect for
their other four players to
concentrate on him."

Chamberlain
Elected MVP
NEW YORK (UPI) —The
players of the National Basket
ball Association have given
recognition to Wilt Chamber
lian’s all-around development by
naming the Philadelphia 76er
center the league’s most
valuable player.
Of a possible 108 first place
votes, Chamberlain received 80
and was named on 90 per cent
of the ballots cast by perfor
mers on all 10 NBA teams.
Each player listed three prefer
ences in order.
Chamberlain took the scoring
title In each of his first seven
years in the league, but last fall
Friday, March 24, 1967
bruising post-season Atlantic
Coast Conference tournament,
defeated Princeton 78-70 and
Boston College 96-80.
All-American Elvin (Big E)
Hayes, a 6-8 forward, carries
the load for Houston. He
averaged 28.7 points and 15.4
rebounds during the regular
season, compared to 29.7 points
and 15.3 rebounds per game for
Alcindor.
Coach Alex Hannum convinced
the all-pro pivot man that it
would take a team effort to give
the 76ers the title, and
Chamberlain produced the need
ed results.
He continued to dominate on
offense, not just by scoring.
Although he dropped to third in
the league in total points,
Chamberlain rose to third in
assists, right behind standout
playmakers Guy Rodgers of
Chicago and Oscar Robertson of
Cincinnati. He set an NBA
record by hitting 68 per cent of
his field goal attempts and
leading the league in rebound
ing. Spurred by his exploits, the
76ers took the Eastern Division
crown and turned in the highest
won-lost percentage in NBA
regular season history.
A distant second in the voting
was San Francisco’s Nate
Thurmond who received 15
votes. Bill Russell, a five time
MVP, was third in the poll
conducted by the Newspaper
Enterprise Association.

SPORTS
‘Supe' Is Looking
For Baseball Job
By MILTON RICHMAN
UPI Sports Writer
LAKELAND, Fla (UPI) —
They call him “Supe” for short.
It fits him perfectly because
he’s heard all the other names
like Superman, Super Star and
Super Jew.
It also fits so well because the
word describes exactly what the
Baltimore Orioles find them
selves in today over the piping
hot question of what to do with
their new Babe Ruth—Mike
Epstein.
Should they keep him and
rearrange their whole world
championship lineup because of
him?
Should they trade him to the
Yankees who are drooling over
the big, brawny, 23-year-old left
handed hitting block-buster?
Or should they send him down
again?
"Everywhere I go I get asked
the same question," Hank
Bauer barks, M < Whatta ya
gonna do with Epstein? . . ,
Whatta ya gonna do with
Epstein?’ If they asked me It
once, they asked me it a
thousand times. I tell ’em all
the same thin. I’m gonna watch
him in spring training and then
make up my mind.”
Epstein, born in the Bronx
and playing pro ball only two
years, was the minor league
player of the year last season.
Did Everything
He did everything but run for
mayor at Rochester where he
drove in 102 runs, hit 29 homers
and batted a nifty .309.
The year before he was rookie
of the year at Stockton. All he
did there was hit .338, drive in
100 runs and hit 30 homors.
Primarily, he’s a first base
man, but since the Orioles
would rather move their franch
ise than Boog Powell, the six
foot-four, 230-pound Epstein has
been playing left field this
spring.
He has been playing it with
all the natural grace of a Ralph
Kiner or Gus Zernial. In other
words, ehhh.
If the Orioles decide to keep
Epstein, left field is the only
place they could play him
because center field would be
first degree murder and a
gentleman by the name of
Frank Robinson happens to be
making a living in right.
This poses a problem. U
Epstein plays left, what hap
pens to Curt Blefary, who did
a good Job there last year and
came up with 23 homers and 64
RBI’s.
"We’ll cross that bridge when
we come to it,” says general
manager Harry Dalton.
Meanwhile, Bauer took the
bull by the horns Thursday
when he put Blefary behind the
plate and had Epstein in left
field and Powell at first base in
a game with Detroit.
Losing Results
The net result was an 11-0
shellacking although Epstein
collected one of the losers’ four
hits and Blefary didn’t look half
bad during his four innings
behind the plate.
As matters now stand,
Epstein and Blefary both have
rapped out 13 his so far this
spring and Powell 10. Blefary is
batting .361, Epstein .317 and
Powell .294.
Supre has three doubles
among his safeties and a 450
foot homer last Monday in
Tampa that the localites there
still are whistling over.
Some people have tried to tell
Epstein that, good as he Is, he
can’t make the Orioles this
year. He won’t buy it.
"I’m going to give 100 per
cent effort and I don’t even
allow myself to think I’ll fail,”
he says.
The Cubs offered Billy
Williams for Epstein last
December and the Yankees
indicate they‘11 go even higher, if
possible.
“If you decide to trade him,”
the Yanks have told the Orioles,
“please give us first crack.”
The Orioles told the Yankees
they’d let them know.
