Smith’s Remark
On Revamp
Draws Criticism
ATLANTA (UPI) — Lt. GOV.
George T. Smith’s remark
about Georgia’s chances of get
ting its new legislative reap
portionment plans approved by
federal court brought quick and
heated reaction Tuesday.
Smith told Young Democrats
at the University of Georgia
Monday night he would be “the
most surprised person in the
state” if the reshuffling plans
were approved by the courts.
“He should have kept his
mouth shut,” said a capitol
legal source. “How would you
like to go into court and have
your own lieutenant governor’s
statements thrown in your
face?”
Several high capitol officers
said it now would be harder to
defend the plans in court.
Gov. Lester Maddox was ex
pected to sign the reapportion
ment bills into law later this
week. Atty. Gen. Arthur Bolton
will then present them to the
court.
Georgia was given until May
1 by Federal court to reappor
tion both Houses. It has been
done several times previously
but each time the court ruled
the results did not meet the
“one man, one vote” standard
set by the U.S. Supreme Court.
The House plan reduces the
lower chamber from 205 to 195
members. The Senate’s pro
posal would Increase its mem
bership from 54 to 56 in 1968.

Food Shopping
Guide
The following guide to the
nation’s food buys for the
weekend was prepared by the
U.S. Departments of Agricul
ture and Interior for United
Press International.
WASHINGTON (UPI) —High
lights of the marketing scene
this weekend include a variety
of beef, poultry, fruits, and
vegetables.
Vegetable trays will be
headed by cabbage, carrots,
celery, lettuce, onions, potatoes,
and tomatoes in plentiful
supply.
At fruit stands, the citrus
family’s grapefruits and oran
ges are in good supply.
Watch for economical beef
roasts and steaks, broiler-fryers
and eggs.
In choosing meat and poultry,
look for the USDA grade shield,
to be sure you’re getting the
quality meat you expect. The
round mark of U.S. inspection
assures you the product , is
wholesome and safe to eat.
These two symbols are your
guarantee that the meat and
poultry you buy have been
checked by experts of the
consumer and marketing ser
vice.
This week’s fish market will
be swimming with plenty of
canned salmon, frozen fish
Beauty Queen
Has To Walk
OXFORD, Miss. (UPI) —
Beauty queen Patsy Puckett
was walking around the Ole
Miss campus this week after
her sleek blue sports car was
smashed in a traffic accident.
The 1967 Jaguar, given to the
former Miss Mississippi by a
secret admirer, spun out of con
trol of loose gravel last week
and was almost demolished.
Reginald (Sandy) Gray, a
law student, was returning
from a date with Patsy and
was alone in the car when the
accident happened. He was ad
mitted to a hospital with cuts
and bruises and minor fractures
of two vertebras.
