the engagement of their daugh
ter, Miss Laura Jean Jackson,
to Mr. Thomas Ed Padgett, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Norton
of Morristown, Tennessee.
The bride-elect Is the grand
daughter of Mrs. C. T. Chamb
liss of Griffin and the late Mr.
Chambliss. She is now attend
ing Griffin High School.
2nd Baptist Circles
March Meets
The Second Baptist Church
Circles met (6r their March
meetings as follows:
Circle One
Mrs. Jennie Gulledge was hos
tess to Circle One at her home.
Mrs. Barney Cunard, leader,
presided. The prayer chairman,
Mrs. Jennie Gulledge, presen
ted the program, “As You
Go, Search’’. Several members
took part on the program. Cof
fee and cake were served during
the social period to the 13 mem
bers and two visitors present.
Circle Two
Circle Two met at the , home of ,
Mrs. W. O. Cunard. Mrs. Roy
Jones, chairman, was in charge
of the meeting. Mrs. Richard
Brown gave the program. She
was assisted by Mrs. J. D. Gil
mer, Mrs. W. o. Johnson and
Mrs. W. O. Cunard. During the
business session, Mrs Roy Gol
den gave the secretary report.
Other committee chairmen gave
reports. The meeting closed with
prayer. The hostess served re
freshments to the 15 members
present. Mrs. J. B. Treadwell
will be the April hostess at her
home.
Circles Three through Six
Circles Three, Four, Five and
Six met at the church for brief
business meetings and obser
vance of the week of prayer for
home mission. Mrs. Eugene Buc
kies is chairman of Circle 111

man of Circle Four, Mrs. Ruby
Varner, leader of Circle Five
and Miss Martha Rivers, Circle

At Gordon
BARNESVILLE — At a ban
quet held at the Crescent House
recently PI Eta Chapter of Phi
Theata Kappa Fraternity was
formally installed at Gordon Mil
itary College. The Installation
ceremony and initiation of nine
charter members was conduc
ted by Miss Darla Massey of
Corsicana, Texas, Southern re
gional representative of th e
fraternity.
The charter members of the
Gordon Chapter are Miss Paula
Adams, Miss Glenda Frost, Lar
ry Bevll, Leonard Hallman,
all of Barnesville; Miss June
Ellerbee and Danny Fowler of
Thomaston: Oeorge Garcia of
Neptune Beach, Fla.; James
Everson, Jr. of Colquitt; D. O.
Clark of Memphis, Tenn.
Phi Theta Kappa Fraternity
was founded in 1918 and is offic
ially recognized by the Ameri
can Association of Junior Col
leges as the honorary fraternity
on the Junior college level. The
organization is the equivalent of
Phi Beta Kappa on the f o u r
year scholastic level.
Membership in the fraternity
Is based on grades in all acade
mic subjects and is the highest
scholastic honor a junior college
student can achieve. Initiates
are given individual certificates
of membership suitable for
framing as well as identifica
tion cards issued by the nation
al headquarters at Canton, Miss
issippi. The official key Is a gold
key bearing the Greek letters of
the fraternity.
Officers of the Gordon Chap
ter are George Garcia in, pre
sident; Danny Fowler, vice-pre
sldent; Glenda Frost, secretary;
June Ellerbee, treasurer. Cap
tain John W. Woodall, III is res
ponsible for the installation of
the fraternity on the Gordon
campus, and he will serve as
faculty advisor for the group.
At the banquet Thursday night
Col. Woodrow Light, president
of the college, welcomed the
students being initiated and con
gratulated them on their achie
vement. LTG Joe Bray, dean,
also offered congratulations and
expressed his pleasure at having
this chapter of a natlonnl honors
fraternity on the campus.
Other guests at the installa
tion ceremony were Miss Marlon
Rush, dean of women, Captain
Woodall, Mrs. Light and M r a.
Bray.

Mr. Padgett served three ye
ars in the United States Army.
He is a graduate of the United
States Armed Forces Institution
in Hawaii. Mr. Padgett is now
manager of the Pic 'n Pay Shoe
Store in Griffin.
The wedding is planned for
June 3 at 8 o’clock p.m. at the
Faith Temple Assembly of God

Circle Seven met with Mrs.
Raymond Hale. After a short
business session, Mrs. Lennie
Williford, leader, gave the pro
gram. Taking part on the pro
gram were Mrs. Claud Barrow,
Mrs. Nora Gatlin, Miss Gertrude
Harris and Mrs. Raymond Hale,
The meeting closed with pray

were served to the five members
present,
Circle Eight
Mrs. Sam V. Jones was hos

home. Mrs. Wyman Merritt
read the names on the mission
ary calendar and led in prayer.

ca Roper, presiding. Mrs. H. H.
Rider gave the program, ‘‘Are
Home Missionaries Needed?”
The business session was con
ducted by Mrs. Roper All Chair
men gave reports. The meeting
closed with prayer. Four mem
bers were present.
