“I don’t see how he can make

as much. I never saw a better

as good as you can get.”
Standing behind the batting
cage, Boyer watched Aaron

personal remark.
"My brother, Kenny, used to
tell me about Aaron. He said he
could hit harder than anyone he
ever saw. I told him no one
could hit harder than Mickey
Mantle. But I saw Aaron hit a
ball in Orlando the other day I
couldn’t believe. The ball hit the
top of a pump house a hundred
feet behind the center field
fence. And that fence is 350 feet
from home plate.”
How HardT
Boyer stopped talking a
moment to follow the flight of
one of Aaron’s drives.
"Goodness, he hits the ball
hard,” exclaimed the 30-year
old infielder who has made a
better living with his glove than
with his bat. “He’s unreal. He
never does anything wrong. Ne
ver. Not since I’ve bee watching
him, anyway.”
When they tried to press him
for his opinion on whether
Aaron hits the ball harder than
Mantle, Boyer refused to
answer.
"Ubuh,” he said. "I’m not
gonna say one way or another."
He didn’t have to, though. His
eyes said it for him the way
they opened wide as silver
dollars each time Aaron ripped
into the ball.
Blco Carty
“He really tears It up,” Boyer
commented after Aaron moved
out of the cage and Rico Carty
stepped In. “This fellow can
bust the ball, too. With all the
hitting they have here, I feel
embarrassed. Honest, I wonder
what I m doing here with guys
like Aaron, Carty, (Felipe) Alou
and (Joe) Torre. Torre reminds
me a lot of (Elston) Howard.
He hits the ball up the middle
just like him.”
Several of the Braves remind
Boyer of his old Yankee
teammates.
Aaron draws natural compari
sons with Mantle, Torre re
minds Boyer of Howard and
Denis Menke brings to mind
now retired Tony Kubek.
“I miss all those guys a lot,"
said Boyer. “Mickey, Whitley,
Tres i and all of 'em. But that’s
the way this game is and I
didn’t fall down when I heard
the Yankees traded me. We got
a shot at it over here, anyway.
I don’t think the Yanks have.
They may have a long shot, but
no more.”
Suddenly it was Boyer’s turn
to hit. He cut the conversation
short and jumped into the cage.
“I need the practice,” he
said.

Dunking Banned In
HS Ball
By JOHN GUINIVEN

dunk shot, a specialty of
giants, will be
in college and high
games next season.
The National Basketball Com
of the United States and
outlawed the dunk shot
a meeting here Tuesday but
proposals for a time
on shooting.
John Bunn, official spokesman
the committee, said the 20
member group banned dunking
an overwhelming majori
ty." He said the move would
“equalize the defense and
offense in play around the
basket, because the dunking
maneuver does not give the
defense an opportunity to block
the shot.”
A violation will cost the team
possession of the ball and any
baskets scored via the dunk will
be disallowed.
As for placing a time limit on
shooting similar to the “24
second rule” of the professional
National Basketball Association,
Bunn said a number of
proposals were discussed but
the committee "never really
approached” approving such a
measure.
“It is the policy of the Rules
Unfortunately, when he finally
did become eligible, most of the
more veteran golfers had al
ready rolled up so many qual

had trouble catching up.
Only the top 10 are chosen
and Nicklaus, with only next
week's Masters left to play be
fore the deadline, Is currently
13th on the list.
.. .Double Burden
This puts a double burden on
the blond Columbus, Ohio,
bomber next week. Not only will
be be striving to become the
only golfer ever to win three
Masters in a row, he’s got that
Ryder Cup matter hanging over
his head.
For Nicklaus, who already set
a precedent when he won two
Masters crowns back-to-back,
this sort of pressure couldn’t
have come at a worse time. He’s
been having putting troubles in
recent weeks and can't seem to
shake it.
"I don’t know what’s wrong,”
Committee not to prohibit
ingenuity and variety as long as
it makes for a good ball game,”

Bunn said the committee has
vast data to support its
decision. He said that in 97 per
cent of the 50,000 cases
examined, a team either has
shot or lost possession of the
ball within 7 seconds.
Qualifying
Starts At AIR
ATLANTA (UPI)—Qualifying
time trials open today at Atlan
ta Raceway to fill the first
eight positions in the 44-car
field for the Atlanta 500 Sun
day.
First of 28 cars to sign in
Tuesday was Fred Lorenzen,
three-time winner of the Atlanta
500, in a Ford. He was followed
by NASCAR national champion
David Pearson in a Dodge and
Curtis Turner in a Chevelie.
Tuesday saw completion of
technical and safety inspections
under the supervision of
NASCAR technical director Bill
Taylor. No major discrepancies
were found.
Nicklaus said sadly. “I even
tried switching putters—but that
only made matters worse. I feel
like I’m putting as always
but the ball Just Isn’t drop
ping.”
Nicklaus barely made the cut
at Jacksonville and again at
Pensacola. He wound up in a tie
for 34th at Jacksonville and a
tie for 3lst at Pensacola—far be
low his usual standard.
But he pointed out that he of
ten gets off to a slow start, then
gets his game back on the
beam at Masters’ time.
Borders on Sensational
Hels record at Augusta the
past four years borders on the
sensational. He won the Mas
ters In 1983, 1965 and I960 and
was tied for second In 1964.
“I drop off the tour each fall
and wiinter for about four
months and It takes me awhile
to get my game back In
shape,” Nicklaus explained.
He picked up $20,000 in “unof
ficial" money back in January
when he won the Bing Crosby
National by five strokes but
he’s earned less than $10,000 In
a half dozen “official” events.
Recognizilng how much is at
stake this year, Nicklaus skip
ped this week’s Greensboro *
Open and headed for Augusta
so he can get in some extra
practice.
