Maddox feels his open sup

the Democratic party needs to

May Hurt Wallace
Gov. George Wallace of Ala

his support for Johnson would

Maddox has said numerous

Looks for Right Turn
But Maddox feels it is imper
ative that the Democratic party
take a turn to the right.
"Otherwise, I could not go a -
long and I think the Democratic
party would be finished for a
number of years in this coun
try," he said. “As far as
I know, I would take a trip to
Spain or go fishing.”
Maddox was referring to an
incident involving Georgia Sen.
Richard Russell who went to
Spain rather than participating
in the 1984 elections.
Although Maddox says it is
doubtful he would give his open
support to any candidate other
than tne Democratic candidate,
he feels behind the scenes sup
port would be Just as effective
for some candidate like Wal
lace.
"I think being active will
make it a lot clearer,” he said..
"But being silent would proba
bly still be effective. I can take
a strong position and I think
it’s going to be very very help

what could be considered an
impoitant role at the national
level.”
Maddox has met with Presi
dent Johnson on several occa
sions. He refuses to say if poli
tics was discussed, but there
are strong Indications Johnson
is aware of Maddox’ position.
Maddox sees Georgia as an
island of Democratic strength
in a sea of third party and Re
publican feeling.
“Alabama has a strong possi
ble third party candidate for
the presidential race next
year," he said. "Florida elected
a Republican governor. Arkan
sas elected a Republican gov-
IS
ernor. And In the United States
Congress we have 47 more Re
publicans than we had last
year.
“I believe because of my can
didacy the Democratic party
has a stronghold in Georgia,
one that held out with all those
other things taking place."
Maddox is cagey about how
much of a conservative swing
the Democratic party would
have to take to gain his sup
port, leaving himself a wide
latitude in which to operate.
But i f seems certain he will use
his position as a lever to lessen
federa 1 intervention in Southern
affairs.
