'The Hat’ Tries One
Of Richards’ Tactics
By FrFD DOWN
UPI Sports Writer
Baseball men blinked back in
1952 when Paul Richards of the
Chicago White Sox used five
first basemen, including a
pitcher, in a game against the
New York Yankees.
One reason for Richards’
unusual strategy was that he
wanted to alternate left and
righthanded pitchers against
Yankee batters in the late
innings of a close game. The
result was that lefthanded
pitcher Billy Pierce played first
base for part of an inning while
righthanded pitcher Harry Dor
ish faced two batters. Pierce
then returned to the mound.
The idea didn’t quite become
as much a part of the game as
peanuts and popcorn, but it Is
being revived by Harry Walker
tiiis spring in hopes of making
the Pittsburgh Pirates a pen
nant winner.
Walker used a slight variation
ot the old shuttle system
Thursday when the Pirates beat
the Washington Senators 11-4.
He switched righthanded pitcher
Tommie Sisk to second base so
t’ at lefty Billy Short could pitch
to two left-handed hitters. Then
he sent Sisk back to the mound
to complete the game.
Previous Trials
Short is a lefty with a jug
liandJed curve who had trials
with the New York Yankees,
Baltimore Orioles and Boston
Red Sox. Although currenlty on
the roster of the Pirates”
Columbus farm team, Short is
regarded by Walker as a late
inning rally-stopped against
tough left-handed hitters. At the

In addition to being embar

Senators lost Paul Casanova,
their talented young catcher,
