Major George Marshall, the

Salvation Army Sunday at

p. m. services, Mrs. Marshall
will accompany him and they
will show slides and give a
talk about the Salvation

Newsprint Cost
Is Increased
NEW YORK (UPI) —Two
more major paper companies
have announced $3 a ton
increases in the price of
newsprint, bringing the cost to
$142 a ton in eastern United
States, effective July 1.
Domtar Ltd., of Montreal, and
the Great Lakes Paper Co.,
Fort William. Ont. announced
the price increases Friday.
They followed the lead of the
Bowater Paper Co., Inc.,
International Paper Sales Corp.,
and Consolidated Paper Corp.,
Ltd., which revealed cost hikes
over the past two weeks.
All five companies cited sharp
increases in costs of producing
newsprint for the price hikes.

Blackshear
Named Judge
GAINESVILLE, Ga. (UPI)—
Joseph Blackshear, Judge of the
city court of Hall County, was
named by Gov. Lester Maddox
Friday to the newly - created
second superior judgship of the
northeastern Judicial circuit.
Blackshear, a staunch Mad
dox supporter, was selected ov
er attorney Tifton Greer of
Gainesville, who was backed by
the local bar association.

Griffin police discovered a
theft from the Cobb Ford Trac
tor company at 650 North Ex
pressway this morning about 1
a.m. while on a routine patrol.

Students Who
Balk On Draft
ATLANTA (UPI) — Seventy
eight Negro college students
who announced Friday they
would not “be used as objects
of war” by submitting to the
draft, today enjoyed the sup
port of Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. who said they were an
‘•inspiration."
The students at Morehouse
College, one of the nation’s
most prestigious Negro colleges,
signed four petitions asking that
they be re-classified as con
scientious objectors.
“We feel that every person
should have the right to declare
as a conscientious objector
■ when and if his conscience dic
tates that he should be one,”

Ike Scott
Retires As
Cotton Buyer
I. A. (Ike) Scott, cotton buyer
for Dundee Mills, Inc., retired
this week at the age of 79.
Mr. Scott was born in the Line
Creek District of Spalding Coun
ty Jan. 7, 1888. He was educa
ted in the Spalding County Sc
hools and the Georgia Institute
of Technology.
From 1910 to 1925 he was en
gaged in the banking business,
first at Senoia and later at
Brooks, Ga. Following the clos
ing of the bank at Brooks, Mr.
Scott moved to Vernon, Fla.,
where he was associated with
the Moody Turpentine Com
pany.
In 1928 he returned to Griffin
and was self-employed as a cot
ton broker until he joined the
Dundee organization In 1941.
Mr. Scott has been a mem
ber of the First Methodist Chur
ch for 39 years. He is also a
member of the Elk’s Club. He
and his wife, the former Mamie
Lee Eubanks of Ft. Valley, live
at 140 Milner avenue. They are
the parents of two children:
Mrs. Mamie S. Black of Tampa,
Fla., and I. A. Scott, Jr. of Col
lege Park, Ga. They have six
grandchildren.
At an informal ceremony held
at his home this week, Mr. Scott
was presented a pair of silver
candelabra by J. M. Cheatham,
president of Dundee Mills. A
number of company officers
and fellow employees were pre
sent to offer their congratula
tions and good wishes.
Couple Held On
Liquor Charges
Griffin Police charged Glenn
Williams and his wife, Martha,
of 412 North 14th street, Griffin
with possessing 15 gallons of
non-taxed liquor.
They were arrested when po
lice raided their house.

Choir To Sing Here
The Ben Lippen High School Concert Choir of Ash
ville, N. C., will sing Sunday morning at 11 o’clock
at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church on Zebulon road. The
choir is under the direction of Ralph Parker. It is on
a tour of the southeast and is presenting concerts in

Revival To
Begin Sunday
At Oak Hill
Revival services will begin
Sunday at Oak Hill Baptist Chur
ch and will continue through
Saturday, April 8. Services will
be held each day at 10 a.m. and
7:30 p.m.
The Rev. G. Merrill Meadows,
former pastor of Oak Hill, will
be the evangelist. The Rev.
Meadows is a native of Man
chester and attended Norman
College, Mercer University and
Seminary at Louisville, Ky.

First Assembly
Loyalty Campaign
Begins Sunday
Sunday School members of
The First Assembly of God
Church begin their annual Lo
yalty Campaign Sunday. As a
part of a national program of
the Assemblies of God, the Cam
paign will emphasize the chur
ch’s reliance on its individual
members for fulfillment of its
varied avenues of Ministry.
The aim of the campaign will
bo to cultivate a sense of loyal
ty to one’s own Sunday School
and church, according to the
pastor, the Rev. E. P. Pruett
and the Rev. C. E. Johnson, As
sociate Pastor. General Sper
intendent of the Sunday School,
Henry Neill will assist Pastors
Pruett and Johnson in direct
ing the campaign.
”My Church Needs Me” is the
theme, which runs for seven
Sundays from Easter to Pente
cost. Members will become in
volved in meaningful projects
that will help him demonstrate
loyalty to the church.
This marks the 20th year that
First Assembly of God has par
ticipated in a Loyalty Campaign.
Currently the Church has a
Sunday School enrollment of 698
with 53 serving on the Sunday
School Staff.

Teenagers Held
In Thefts From
Paper Machines
Three teenagers told College
Park Police that they took mo
ney from newspaper vending
machines in the Griffin area
Friday night.
College Park police notified
Griffin authorities they were
holding the youths. They were
from Rex, Ga., Morrow, Ga.,
and Forest Park.
Griffin Police placed hold or
ders on the three.

Lewis Durham, 26, of 114 Leo
street, was held on a drunk char
ge and in the investigation of a
house burglary, Griffin police
said today.
He was arrested when a call
came from 803 East Solomon st
reet this morning at 4:30. A wo
man said that someone was try
ing to break into the house.
