POLLY'S POINTERS
Foam Pillow
DEAR POLLY — I hope some
of the readers can give me tips
that would be useful when tra
veling with small children. We
need some quiet but interesting
activities for seven days to be
spent on a boat. Our quarters
will be small and we will need
to be conscious of not disturbing
others. I am sure some parents
have developed wonderful activ
ities for travel as well as for
use at home. — MRS. W.L.S.
DEAR POLLY — Wrap some
waxed paper or cellophane ar
ound a foam pillow to make an
easy job of getting the pillow
into a rough-textured pillow co
ver, such as terry cloth, cordu
roy and so on. Wrap it all ar
ound the pillow, slip it into the
case and then pull the paper out.
No more tugging and pushing.
—MARIE
DEAR POLLY — A wooden
clothespin makes a very good
gadget to use for coring apples.
Just insert the stem end and
gently press down. — L.W.
DEAR POLLY — I want to
tell Mrs, J.C. that the mold that
forms on her shoes may be
there because she keeps them
in tightly closed plastic contai
ners. Leather shoes must “brea
the” and hers may have had
some moisture in them when
put away in such air-tight con
tainers. This would cause the
mold to form. She could try pun
ching holes in the plastic con
tainers or bags — such holes as
are often in fruit or begetable
bags. Cardboard boxes with
holes punched in them could al
so be used. — MRS. A.C.P.
DEAR POLLY — A melon bai
ler is good to use when trying
to get olives out of a jar. T h e
hole in the middle lets the juice
out. — KIM
DEAR POLLY — When I fin
ish ironing with my steam iron,
I empty the water while the iron
is still hot so the heat will dry
its inside completely and pre
vent any corrosion.
I use thin plastic bags that
come from the dry cleaners
when packing things to be mail
ed. They are spacerfilling and
pliable and hold the item sta
tionary. They weigh so little that
today’s high postage rates are
not greatly increased.
When we take the children on
a long automobile trip I always
take along a cookie sheet with
sides. It is just right for a lap
board and the sides prevent cra
yons and pencils from rolling
off to the floor. — MRS. H.E.M.

DEAR POLLY — My hint
concerns itching as a result of
wearing a cast. After my knee
had been operated on I wore a
cast for about a month. My doc
tor gave me specific instructions
not to scratch the knee with any
thing as I might tear open the
incision. In desperation, I blew
cold air from my hair dryer
down the cast and it stopped the
itching. This felt so good and
really saved the day for me se
veral times. — SUSAN
What a smart girl to check
with her doctor before trying
anything to remedy the itch
ing inside her cast. — POLLY
