Is the shoe lace going the way
of the buggy whip? Gentlemen’s
Quarterly thinks there's a chan
ce as more and more men pre
fer a slip-on style of shoes for
business as well as casual wear.
Currently in favor, too, is t h e
ctrap-and-buckle type of closure.
The white shirt with its but
ton-down collar is giving way to
long-point and spread collars,
to fresh colorings in patterns and
bold stripes. One reason: new
elegance in men’s suits featur
ing waist-shaped single-breas
teds and the return of the dou
ble-breasteds.
Let laughter go to your head.
Don a colorful cotton fun hat

comes in a cutaway cloche that
can be worn backward or for

HOME HINTS
Your furniture should be dust
ed the right way frequently. Fol
low the grain of the wood to av
oid causing surface scratches.
Use a drop or two of a quality
furniture polish on your dustclo
th to help pick up dust, instead
of just pushing it around the
surface.
To assure a more professional
looking paint job on the outside
of your house, first make all ne
cessary repairs. Repair any
loose glass, replace cracked or
broken window panes, nail loose
boards, and caulk any place
where water can get in.
Mix confectioners’ sugar and
water to paste consistency and
use to make commercial cake
and cookie decorations stay put.

Shape Up for the Pantsuit
By HELEN HENNESSY
Women's Editor
Newspaper Enterprise Assn.
NEW YORK — (NEA) —
Women first took to trousers
years ago when they discov
ered how comfortable leggy
fashions could be. But things
have changed since pants
were “let go” clothes. Now
they’re “shape up” styles and
what you wear under them
has a lot to do with how you
look.
Buying either pants or
pantie girdle too small, think
ing you’ll LOOK smaller, is a
mistake. Actually, you’ll look
bigger by creating a roll at
the waistline or a bulge at the
thigh.
Correct length is important,
too. Leg lengths are propor
tioned today to both figures
and fashions and a number of
manufacturers, reports the
Corset and Brassiere Council,
are producing super-longs
with concealed garters espe
cially for pantsuits.
There also are sleek one
piece pantie foundations that
afford midriff control as well
as uplift and hip-over-thigh
smoothing. Lengths and
strengths vary. Don’t slip into
a “little nothing” if you need
control.
Stretch pettipants are good
with culotte-style pantsuits.
These are cut slim and are
pretty enough to be seen
when a breeze lifts your hem
line.
Since pantsuits generally
come complete as costumes
with blouse or sweater you
have to consider the right bra
as well as the right hip-hug
ging foundation to wear un
derneath. The typical pants
look is pared down—trim and
POLLY'S POINTERS

DEAR POLLY —My Pointer

trouble getting their dogs to take
medicine. I keep a jar of baby
food on hand, preferably meat.
When I have to give my dog a

without knowing he is taking
medicine. Often when one tries
to stick a pill down a dog’s th

DEAR POLLY — Saturday af
ternoons at grandma's are a lot
smoother since I bought cheap
bedroom slippers to fit all my
grandchildren. We keep the slip
pers in a box in the hall closet.
The children slip them on when
they arrive and leave them there
when they go home. This saves
soiling socks by walking around
without shoes, and I am saved
much scrubbing and wiping up
after they have gone home.
Their snow boots are left neat

DEAR POLLY — When my
child outgrows his pajamas with
feet in them, I simply cut off
the feet where the elastic is ar
ound the ankles. This leaves nice
house slippers for baby when he
is sick, or just for running ar
ound the house. — S.L.B.
