Jonesboro Blanks
Griff in Eagles, 1-0
Although no official records
are immediately available, a
check probably would reveal the
Jonesboro Cardinals have never
beaten the Griffin Eagles.
That was true Monday. How
ever, it is not today.
The Cardinals, who hadn’t
won a game in six tries, came
to town Tuesday and promptly
shot down the high-flying Eag
les, 1-0.
It was a crucial loss for the
Eagles, who were rolling along
with a unblemished league rec
ord.
“It was a tough way to lose a
ball game,” Coach Don Pierce
said this morning.
“The loss leaves us tied with

G. R. ROBINSON, MGR.
11l South Hill Street — Griffin, Georgia
R. B. Lee. Lee beat Forest Park
to raise its record to 3-1. Now we
are 3-1,” he said.
Ken Strickland pitched a mag
nificent game for the Eagles.
He allowed only two hits. Both
of them came in the seventh.
He was on the verge of pitch
ing a no-hitter and still being
charged with a loss.
The Griffin left-hander struck
out 18 batters, equalling the
previous record this year set by
Grady Pierce against Fayette
County.
The Jonesboro hurler, Tommy
Hand, wasn’t as effective in the
strikeout department but he did
throw a one-hitter at the Eag
les.
powerful.
But the friendly Dominican
who constantly amazes the
Braves faithful with the way he
can fire strikes to home plate
from his left field spot turned
into the slugger of the evening
Tuesday night.
Carty slammed a three - run
homer in the third inning while

Hand fanned only one batter.
Coach Pierce said that Hand’s
curves and other pitches were
so slow that Griffin’s timing was
way off.
“We couldn’t get any wood
on the ball. I can’t remember
but once or twice when the ball
was hit out of the infield. We
were hitting little slow rollers
back to the pitcher or to the
infielders,” he said.
David Gossett kept Hand from
pitching a no hitter by beating
out a grounder in the third.
Griffin will travel to Fo r est
Park Friday for a game with
the Panthers.
If Griffin beats Forest Park,
the stage will be set for a big
game Tuesday in Thomaston.
the Braves were on their way
to a 7-1 victory over the Los
Angeles Dodgers and their sixth
victory in their last seven
games.
Going along with the Carty
power was the pitching of
righthander Ken Johnson who
scattered seven hits to mark up
his second victory against one
loss this season.
The Dodgers averted a shut
out in the eighth inning when
Bob Bailey rapped out a home
run.
The Dodgers’ Jim LeFebvre
equalled a National League rec
ord for errors in one inning by
a third baseman, booting three
chances in the fourth inning.
Carty’s base cleaner was set
up when Alou singled and took
second on a balk by Bob Mill
er. Aron was walked intention
ally and then Jones doubled in
Alou. Carty then delivered his
homerun.
The Braves got two runs in
the first on a pair of walks,
Jones’ single and Joe Torre’s
sacrifice fly and got the fourth
one in the fourth inning amid
LeFebvre’s glove troubles.
The Braves and Dodgers go
at it again tonight with Don
Drysdale, 0-2, seeking his first
victory in a duel with Tony
Cloninger, 1-1.

IT PAYS TO HAVE CONNECTIONS ... An eager
young lawyer, fresh out of law school and trying out a
brand new desk, looked up to see a shadow outside his
door glass. Immediately he snapped up his phone receiver
and informed an imaginary client, “Yes, Mr. Smythe, I
understand. I’m quite busy at the moment with several
other cases, but I think I can fit your case in.” He replaced
the receiver, much pleased with his ingenuity, and inquired
solemnly of his new visitor, “Yes, sir; and what can I
do for you?”
“I’ll only be a moment, sir,” replied the visitor. “I’m from
the telephone company, and I’m here to connect your
phone.”
