TIME CHANGE COMES soon as another season rolls around. Change mood of room
from contemporary (left) to country (right) or vice versa with area rugs, new slip
covers, some paint and appropriate fabric designs.

NEW YORK — (NEA) — Few things break
the gloom of long winter months more than
a change in surroundings. Even people living
in the sunny states look for a varied mood.
For those who can’t take a trip to another
state or country, simple switches in home
decor may answer a gnawing restlessness
associated with this time of year.
Once, like clockwork, all the women in the
neighborhood swept into their spring clean
ing routines. This activity was a harbinger
of new curtains and slip covers. Spring clean
ing per se has’ changed with the times. How
ever, redecorating touches continue to bright
en a room for another season.
Establishing a new look needn’t be expen
sive. A little paint, an inexpensive area rug
and some fabric convert a “country” living
room, for example, into a “contemporary”
setting. Switching accessories also freshens
the room’s decor.

SUMMER’S SHADES feature a new round of styles in the sunglass department.
“Shades” is the exact way to describe the creation at far left, which uses fabric on the
top part of the glass and a small visor to give protection from a bright sun. A “devil
ish” look is featured on the center pair, with frames of sweeping points. More con
ventional is the “owl-eye” pair of sunglasses at right, with round and bold frames that
a girl can really hide behind.

A room with a country look begins with an
adaptation of an Early American braid rug
but with a modern ombre color. One design
of Avisco rayon comes in such springy shades
as Spanish gold, verdure, delft blue or aza
lea. Pick up one of the tones, say of the blue,
and repeat as a painted interior of a book
case in the room or in a new vase or other
ceramic accessories.
A contemporary floral slip cover and small
throw pillows pick up the color scheme. Top
off the traditional flavor with reproductions
of an American eagle, an old coach light or
an old tavern sign.
To make this room contemporary, select a
stylized design area rug perhaps in avocado,
poppy or taffy. Offset the bold design with
a simple, solid-colored upholstery. Continue
the modern mood with an all-white end table
with white lamp and pleated shade. For
paintings or prints select modern motifs. In
a bookcase or on other tables in the room
continue to contrast light and dark by using
white accessories.
