Darrell Jones Pitches
No-Hitter In Griffin LL
There’s nothing better than
opening the season with a no
hitter unless its opening with a
perfect game.
Darrell Jones wasn’t perfect
Tuesday night but he might as
well hav» been as far as Ex
change Club is concerned.
The First National hurler
threw a no-hit, 11-0 whitewash
ing Job at Exchange and, as if
that wasn’t enough, he hit a
three-run homer in the third.
The Jaycees got strong pit
ching from George Peurifoy,
who fanned 16 and walked only
three, to beat Kiwanis, 12-7.
Jones struckout 13 and walked
only three while firing the no
hitter. The most he could have
fanned in the game that was cut
short by an inning was 15.
Exchange’s only runners came
on a walk in the first and two
free passes in the fourth.
Jones received solid hitting
support from his mates.
Keith Tate hit two home runs
and a double for a perfect day
at the plate. One of his homers
was a solo blast and the other
came with two mates aboard.
Mike Maddox hit a double and
two singles, Robin Watts had
two singles, Darrell Huckaby
had two singles and Jim Scho
bak had one.
Margaret Burdeshaw
Wins Handicap Tourney
Margaret Burdeshaw shot a
78 here Tuesday to win the Grif
fin Ladies Golf Association 18-
hole Handicap Tournament.
She was awarded the Margaret
Burdeshaw Trophy, which is
presented the winner.
Margaret Moore was runner
up.
Pat Baker and Mell Bucking
ham tied for third place and
Gwen Skrine placed fourth.
The second, third and fourth
place finishers were awarded
S*tees.
Lucy Reynolds won the spec
ial nine-hole flight for begin
ners.
Kitty Butler was second and
Ruth Gary placed third. They
were presented trophies.
The special flight was for golf
ers, who recently completed a
golf clinic taught by pro Pete
Ferris.
Jacksonia Wood did not com
pete in the tournament.
She represented the GLGA in
a one-day invitational In Rome,
Ga. and was runner-up In her
flight.
Sooners, Dundee
Play 44 Minute
Slow Pitch Game
The Sooners and Dundee may
have set a slow-pitch record
here Tuesday when they play
ed a complete, seven inning
game in 44 minutes.
Larry Neill, assistant direc
tor of the Griffin Recreation De
partment, couldn’t remember a
slow pitch game lasting less
than 50 minutes.
Sooners beat Dundee 6-1. Char
les Pursley hit a home run for
the Sooners and Thomas McGa
hee hit two singles. Billy Car
ver hit a home run for Dundee.
Dennis Goss had two singles.
Quality Gas defeated Holan
25-3 in the second game. Billy
Mann hit two homers and a tri
ple for Quality Gas. Terry Cham
bers hit two doubles and a tri
ple. Howard Bennett hit a dou
ble and single for Holan and
Herbert Dunn tripled.
Rooks beat Atlanta Gas 16-2.
Johnny Kitchens hit three sin
gles for Rooks and Jerry Davis
hit a home run and double. Da
vid Perkins hit a double and
single for Atlanta Gas. Melvin
Whidby hit tw'o singles.
BOCHNA NAMED
KENT, Ohio (UPX) —Rudy
Bochna was name manager of
the 1967 American Men’s
gymnastics team that will
compete in the Pan American
Games in Winnigeg, Canada,
July 17-19, it was announced
Tuesday by the U. S. Olympic
Committee.

Peurifoy wasn’t quite as ef
fective as Jones but he was too
tough for Kiwanis. The young
ster, besides whiffing 16, hit a
pair of homers. He slammed one
in the second with the bases em
pty and hit another in the sixth
with one on.
Charles Buckalew hit two
doubles and a single. Mark Dick
inson had two hits and Mike
Brown, Kenneth Hand, Don Col
bert and Joe McGee had one.
Wendell Lindsey had two hits
for Kiwanis and Jim Hedder
man, Clint Smith, John Flynn,
Jeff Goen and Bill Varnadoe had
one.
Varnadoe was the losing pit
cher. He had relief help from
Jeff Goen in the fourth.
Darrell Chapman was char
ged with Exchange’s loss. He
struckout 11 and didn’t issue
any walks.

For Roll-Off
Sherry Steele bowled a 182
game and averaged 154 for a
three game set Tuesday night
in the Dundee League.
Team Two continues to lead
the second half and appears
headed for a roll-off with Team
Three, which won the first half.

ST. LOUIS (UPI) —General
manager Marty Blake of the St.
Louis Hawkes announced Tues
dy the signing of Dave Brown
and Bob Edmunds, “two fine
pro prospects”, to their 1967-68
contracts.
Brown, a 6-3, 195 pound guard
from Lafayette College aver
aged 25 points and 10 rebounds
in his senior year. Edmunds, 6-7
and 235 pounds, average 15
rebounds a game in 1963 and ’64
his last two years at Tennessee
State.

NEW YORK (UPI) —Talent
ed but Tempermental Art
Heyman, who spent lour years
trying to make it in the NBA,
signed with the New York
Freighters of the American
Basketball Association it was
announced Tuesday.
The 6-5, 25-year-old Heyman,
a star at Duke, played with
New York, San Francisco,
Cincinnati, Philadelphia and
Boston in the NBA.
