SHE MADE IT— Sandy Hilder,
Australian blonde who hid
under an admiral’s bed

in an attempt to join her
seaman boyfriend in the U.
S., visits the United Nations
Building in New York. She
was discovered, but managed
to get a plane ride from
down under.

Charm Lies In
Underlines
By DICK WEST
United Press International
WASHINGTON (UPI) —One
of the major industries in
Washington is the production of
"newsletters” that give, or
purport to give, inside informa
tion.
They are published by the
score in a bewildering variety
of formats on a wide range of
subjects. But generally speaking
they have one thing in common:
Many of the words, some of
the sentences and occasionally
even entire paragraphs are
underlined. This is what gives
newsletters their special charm.
Specialty
Other publications may pro
vide the same tips, trends,
analyses, forecasts, rumors and
background data. But only the
newsletters underline them.
When a newsletter subscriber
comes across something that
has been underlined, he knows
he is reading something really
significant. Even if it might
otherwise seem unconsequen
tial.
The growth of newsletters
obviously has made underlining
a vital part of journalism. A
good newsletter editor must
first and foremost be a good
underliner. Yet training in this
field has been badly neglected.
Underlining remains more of
a natural instinct than an
acquired skill
I am proposing therefore that
journalism schools consider
offering courses in advanced
underlining, which students may
take in lieu of headline writing.
And on the chance that some
college might want to hire me
as an underlining professor, I
have already prepared the final
examination.
Course For Students
I have taken some recent
news items and written them in
newsletter style, but with the
underlines omitted. Students
will be required to fill in the
underlines.
If you would like to take the
test as a sort of correspondence
course, be my guest. (Grades
supplies upon request.)
The do-it-yourself newsletter
—lnside psychedelics: Atomic
Energy Commission has ex
panded security risk list to
include nonmedical users of
hallucinogenic drugs. However,
hippies are unconcerned, insi
ders report.
With LSD, they can dream up
their own atomic secrets. Which
may be more interesting than
AEC’s.
—lnside crash programs: new
highway safety study urges
intensive crash program to
remove roadside hazard, crash
into it.
—lnside holiday: Someone

"American comedy day” May

they should have been observed
