An Hoa Church Looks Like
Butchery Shop Os Viet War
By FRANK JOHNSTON
United Press International
AN HOA, Vietnam (UPI) —
This is a church, and at one
time it must have been a
beautiful building of peace.
Now, it looked like a butchery
shop of war.
Beside an altar where a
crucifix stood was the bloodied
body of an American Marine . .
. pews were filled only with
wounded and dying . . . the
stench of death permeated what
once was a house of God.
These are the sights and
sounds and smells of war you
would like to forget. But you
know you cannot.
An Hoa Church was built by
the French in what once was a
peaceful segment of Vietnamese
countryside. But war has
replaced peace, and the church
is now known in the parlance of
the day as a "military
objective.’*
As it was this day, when UPI
film cameraman lb Heller and I
dashed with a group of
leathernecks of the Ist Batta
lion, 9th U.S. Marines, toward
the massive church.
Important Objective
It was an Important objective
because An Hoa Church is less
than two miles south of Con
Thien, an American base the
Communists have been desper
ately trying to capture for Ho
Chi Minh’s birthday.
Suddenly, the eerie whine of
incoming mortar shells split the
air, and the rear door of the
church became for me a
gateway to safety.
There were those who got in
alive, and who would get out
alive after a night of terror.
And there were those who
also got in alive, but who would
leave only when their bodies
were wrapped in a waterproof
poncho.
The first wounded came in
after the barrage. One was the
company's only medic, and he
had a banged up leg.

Another was a Marine Corps
correspondent. He was in the
Squad I had tagged along with
earlier. After I left them, a
mortar round came in and hit
all at once.
He was a friend, and I rushed
over to hold his head while he
was being treated.
“I don’t want to die,” he
pleaded, looking up at me.
“You’re not, old buddy,” I
replied. “You’re just wounded
in the legs. It’s not that
serious.” But, sickeningly, I
knew it was.
Just behind him, another
Marine moaned, “water, some

By JAN HAMMOCK
By the excited conversation
and smiling faces it is easy to
see that summer vacation is not

FLORENCE
FLORENCE, Italy (UPI) —
Nightlong rain flooded many
streets and basements in
Florence Wednesday. Sewers
still partly mud-choked from
last November’s flood disaster
were unable to take the
rainwater.
Florence firemen answered
200 calls for flooded basements
and shops. The city suffered its
worst flood damage in seven
centuries last November.
GAS EXPLOSION
MUNICH, Germany UPI) —
An apparent gas explosion
ripped through the telephone
exchange in suburban Grafing

were hurled against the walls
“like dolls.”
One woman died after being
hospitalized. Six other persons
were seriously injured.
water, I’m going to pass out.”
I looked around. Most of the
Leathernecks were almost out
of water. The rest had none at
all. I opened my canteen,
leaned back and poured some
over his feverish head.
Suddenly, more mortar shells
slammed into the area. I dived
into a corner to shield myself.
Ib Heller was lying flat on the
floor, the rounds hitting outside
only five yards from his head,
sending pieces of the W’all and
ceiling down on him.
The others could do little for
themselves—the Marines lying
in blood on the pew’s, the floor,
the altar.
