Griffinite
Remembered
His Family
A Griffinite who was away
from his family on Mother’s
Day this year for the first time
in 21 years of marriage cheered
his wife and -children with flow
j ers and a three page letter tell
i ing them how much he loves
them.
T-Sgt. Harold D. Smith, Who
is serving in Thailand with the
U. S. Air Force, wired the yel
low and white flowers to his
wife, the former Helen Kelley
of Griffin, and their children,
June 8, and Kevin, 5.
Sgt. Smith is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Green Smith, 302 Spr
ing street, Griffin. His wife is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Clifford Kelley of Brooks.
They moved to Tampa, Fla.,
when Sgt. Smith was assigned
to Mac Dill Air Base near there.
Sgt. Smith has five more ye
ars of duty with the Air Force
before he will retire. Then he
and his family plan to return to
Griffin to make their home.

announce the birth of a daugh
ter on May 18 at the Griffin-Sp
alding County Hospital.
Mr. Crowder Os
Barnesville Dies
BARNESVILLE, Ga. — Mr.
David Eugene Crowder, 58, of
218 Zebulon street, Barnesville,
died at his residence early to
day.
Mr. Crowder was a painter. A
native of Pike County he had re
sided in Barnesville most all of
his life. He was graduated from
Gordon Military College in
1924. Mr. Crowder was a mem
ber of the First Methodist Chur
ch, a member of the Lamar
Civic League, the Pinta Lodge
88 of Masons and a member of
the William Tracy Gould Com
mandry. He was a 32nd degree
Mason and a member of the Al
Shiah Shrine Temple in Macon.
He is survived by his widow,
Mrs. Frankie Connally Crowder;
a step-son Chief Warrant Offi
cer J. G. Adams, US Army, sta
tioned in Ethiopia; two step
daughters, Mrs. Richard Laugh
lin of Savannah, Mrs. W. R. Gr
iffin of Raleigh, N.C.; one sister,
Mrs. T. T. Hartness of Macon
and 10 step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Saturday at 3 p.m. in
Haisten’s chapel in Barnes
ville. The Rev. Howard Ethlng
ton and the Rev. James Griffin
will officiate.
Burial will be in Greenwood
cemetery.

Turner Gets
Scholarship
To Georgia Tech
Richard Turner, president of
the Griffin High student body
this year, has been awarded a
four-year scholarship to study
textile engineering at Georgia
Tech.
He received one of seven sc
holarships presented by the
Textile Education Foundation,
Inc.
Another student in this area
who received one of the scho
larships was Fred L. Cook, Rou
te One, Box 285, Jackson.
Winners of the scholarships
will study at the A. French Tex
tile School at Tech beginning
this fall.
They were selected by the
Georgia Tech Committee on
Student Grants-In-Aid and Scho
larships. The criteria of selec
tion included character, persona
lity and leadership qualities, po
tential' executive ability, finan
cial need and a scholastic' re
cord in keeping with Georgia
Tech’s Admission standards.

Brother Dies
Mr. James W. Foster of Ma
con died Wednesday morning
at a Macon hospital.
Mr. Foster was a resident of
Henry County.
He is survived by a sister,
Mrs. Ada Massey of Griffin.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Friday morning at 11 o’-
clock from the Memorial Chapel

will officiate and burial will be
in the Mt. Carmel Methodist
Church cemetery.

Nurse’s Choir
Will Sing At
DeVotie Sunday
The Nurse’s Choir of The Geor
gia Baptist School of Nursing
will be guests at DeVotie Bap
tist Church Sunday morning.
The choir will be present for
Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. It
will sing and several of the gr
oup will give talks relating their
experiences with indigent pat
ients.
This work is supported throu
gh gifts taken on Hospital Day
in Georgia Baptist Churches in
May of each year.
The choir will occupy the choir
loft during the morning wor
ship service and will present two
messages in song. Following the
morning worship service the
choir will be guests of the mem
bers of DeVotie at a luncheon
served in Jackson Fellowship
Hall of the church.

House Speaker
Says Tax Plan
News To Him
ATLANTA (UPD — Gov. Les
t r Maddox and House Speaker
George L. Smith clashed today
over an alleged agreement that
the House, the Senate and the
Executive Departmnt work to
gether on ax revision.
Maddox met with Lt. Gov.
George T. Smith and Revenue
Commissioner Peyton Hawes,
then told newsmen an agree
ment had been made that the
legislate - - and executive would
\ ork together.
“It’s news to me,’’ said the
House speaker. • House has
already irganized a tax revi
sion committee and is to begin
work Monday.
It is known that the lieuten
ant governor is miffed with the
speaker because the Senate has
not been called in on the
tax revision committee. Lt.
Gov. Smith refused any official
comment.
Speaker Smith said the Sen
ate approached members of his
committee fter it discovered
the House was moving ahead
with tax revision and the House
said it would like to work with
the Senate.

Miss Sara Dunn
Dies Today
Miss Sara Eula Dunn of 1203
West Taylor street, died this
morning at the Griffin-Spalding
County Hospital. Miss Dunn had
been ill for several years.
A native of Pike County, she
was the daughter of the late
Henry Dunn and the late Mar
tha Coggins Dunn, she had re
sided in Griffin for the past 32
years. Miss Dunn was a mem
ber of the Mt. Olive Baptist
Church.
She is survived by one sister,
Mrs. G. D. Gibson and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Sunday afternoon at 2:30
o’clock from Haisten’s chapel.
The Rev. Allen Huckaby and the
Rev. Fred Kendrick will offici
ate and burial will be in Oak
Hill cemetery. Miss Dunn's
body will remain at Haisten Fu
neral Home.

George R. Dixon, manager of
the W. T. Grant store in Griffin,
today announced company sa
les for the month ended April
30. 1967 of $65,796,133, 10.11 per
cent under April 1966 sales of
$73,196,076. Calendar year to
date sales of $233,277,248 are up
$5,154,033 or 2.26 percent over
sales of $228,123,215 for the like
period in 1966.

Funeral services for Mr. Os
car Lewis Meeks of New Orle
ans, La., formerly of Griffin,
will be conducted Saturday mor
ning at 11 o’clock from McDon
ald Chapel. The Rev. Walter
Langdon wt'l officiate.
Burial will be in the Beulah
Baptist Chur'h cemetery in
Pike County.
Mr. Meeks’ body will remain
at McDonald Chapel until time
of the service.

Jaycees Making
Plans For 4th
The Griffin Jaycees announ
ced today that they are plan
ning a day of activities at the
Municipal Park on July Fourth.
The celebration has become an
annual event for the Jaycees.
Jim Wiggins of the Jaycees
said games are being planned
for the whole family. A parade
is being planned through down
town Griffin to start the day’s
activities.
A barbecue and beauty con
tests to name Miss Fourth ot
July and Little Miss Fourth of
July are planned, Wiggins said.
Mr. Ridgeway Os
Jackson Dies
JACKSON, Ga. — Mr. Sam
uel Prentice Ridgeway, 78, well
known Butts County farmer, died
at the Sylvan Grove Hospital in
Jackson Thursday afternoon
where he was admitted a week
ago.
Mr. Ridgeway was a lifelong
resident of Butts County where
he was engaged in farming. He
was the son of the late Thomas
Ridgeway and Mrs. Della Thax
ton Ridgeway. Mr. Ridgeway
was a member of the Antioch
Christian Church.
He is survived by three daugh
ters, Mrs. Martha Dell Sims of
Jackson, Mrs. Robert Coleman
of Forest Park, Mrs. James C.
Durham of Atlanta; four sons,
Harry Ridgeway, Franklin Rid
geway, David Ridgeway, all of
Jackson and Tommy Ridgeway
of Salisbury, N.C.; and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be con
ducted at the Towilage Baptist
Church Saturday afternoon at
3 o’clock. The Rev- Gerald Ker
sey and the Rev. Arthur - L. Pr
ice will officiate and burial will
be in the church cemetery. Hais
ten Funeral Home of Jackson is
in charge of plans.
