NS Savannah Jilted Bride
By LEON DANIEL
United Press International
TOKYO (UPD—Savannah was
a lady and when she hove
majestically Into view off the
Georgia coastline, her sleek
and ample lines trim in bridal
white, there was a promise of
greatness.
For the people of Savannah,
Ga., the celebration was the
culmination of a love affair.
Like all trreat ladies, Savan
nah was expensive. For this
and other reasons the govern
ment of the United States ap
parently has decided j cast her
off.
A Japanese shipyard at
Tamano last week launched its
latest freighter, the Savannah
Maru. She will call regularly at
the port of Savannah.
Nobody asked me, but her re
ception there is not going to be
the same as that great day
seven years ago. 1 know be

arrived at Savannah on her
maiden voyage.
Bands played. People cheered.
The Georgia governor spoke
glowingly of a great lady.
J. B. Thomas, a columist for
Tokyo’s Shipping and Trade
News, wrote last week that
“perhaps the good people of
Georgia will dye the riv er
green” if the Savannah Maru
calls there on St. Patrick’s
Day.
It is not likely, Mr. Thomas.
The people of Savannah, many
of whom are of Irish descent,
would make that gesture only
for their first love.
Thomas writes that the burial
decree of the NS Savannah is
irrevocable despite efforts of
a New York City group called
the Citizens Committee for Nu
clear Shipping.
Thomas hopes, and so do I,
that their SOS will be heeded.
Thomas calls the Savannah
“the jilted bride of American
marine progress.”
6
He puts it this way:
"Today the Germans, Japa
nese, Russians, Italians and
others firmly believed the mari
time nuclear age already ap
proaches and are acting on their
conviction; America, recanting,
is ashamed of her vision and
is actually about to sweep her
erstwhile proud, nuclear fore
runner under the rug—out of
sight, out of mind ”
T suppose there are good ar
guments for casting off the Sa
vannah.
Thomas writes that the Sa
vannah ran into trouble because
the bureaucrats wanted her to
be all maritime things—a show
piece, a cargo vessel, a passen
ger carrier. It was too much to
ask.
But perhaps I remember too
well that moment when a great
ship, the first and only one of
its kind, hove into view far on
the horizon off Savannah and a
youngster standing beside me
started yelling “There she is,

Service It will be built as part
of the Clayton General Hospi

be built soon.
It is the third such project ap

Judge Goddard
Appointed To
Historical Unit
Judge John Goddard of Griffin
has been appointed to the Geor
gia Historical Commission. He
was named to the five-man state
board by Ben Fortson, secretary
of state.
Judge Goddard succeeded Al
exander Lawrence of Savannah
who resigned. The Griffin jurist
will fill the unexpired term of
Mr. Lawrence which runs into
February of next year.
J. B. Cumming of Augusta is
chairman of the commission.
Mr. Fortson appointed Judge
Goddard to the post because of
his interest in history. Judge
Goddard wrote a history of the
First Baptist Church and a book
about the Mills and Cope famil
ies of Georgia published in 1963.
The commission is responsible
for historical records, markers,
grants for keeping such records
and similar activities related to
the history of the state.
NtOSENSE OF HUMOR
MADISON, Wis. (UPD —
James Hicks of Madison told
Judge William Buenzli it was
his first offense.
“What do you mean, your
first offense? Your driving
record shows this is the fifth
time you have been brought in
on this charge, the last time in
1965,” said the judge.
“That’s what I meant,” said
Hicks. “This is my first offense
since the last one.”
“Six months in jail,” decreed
an unamused judge.
