Billy O’Dell Returns
To Haunt Braves
By DAVID M. MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) — Billy
O’Dell is back in the starting
rotation after three years in
the bullpen and he likes it fine.
“Starting is a lot easier than
relieving,” said the 34-year-old
O'dell after pitching Pittsburgh
to a 5-3 victory over the Atlan
ta Braves Thursday night to
run his record to 4-0.
“You’ve got to work every
day when you’re out there in
the bullpen,” O’Dell said.
"When you’re a starter, you
can pace yourself.”
O’Dell, a 19-game winner for
the Giants in 1962, started 33
games in ’63 when he was 14-10,
but started only 11 more over
the next three years although
appearing in 159.
“I got off to an 8-0 start in
’63, then tore a tendon in my
ankle and was out six weeks,”
he said. “Somehow’, I wound up
as a relief pitcher the next
season and didn’t get back into
the rotation until this year.”

Maybe O’Dell didn’t like it
out there in the bullpen, but
he’s thankful that Elroy Face
does. Face, w’ho has started on
ly 27 times in 709 major league
appearances, shut the door on
the Braves Thursday night
when it appeared they might
be getting to O’Dell.
Face, making his 11th relief
appearance this year, ran his
scoreless string to 12 innings by
setting the Braves down in the
eighth and ninth.
O’Dell had plenty of support
from those blazing Pirate bats.
Pittsburgh rapped out 16 hits,
including home runs by Don
Clendenon and Bill Mazeroski,
a triple by Maury Wills and
doubles by Roberto Clemente,
Jerry May and Willie Stargell—
a total of 27 bases.
Clemente raised his major
league leading average to .393,
Gene Alley's rose to .349, and
May and Mazeroski were both
3-for-5 to jump to .333 and .331
respectively while Wills’ aver
age climbed to .318. Matty Alou
7
at .301 gives the Pirates six
regulars hitting over .300.
Oddly enough, despite all
those Pirate hits, the Braves
were never out of contention
and trailed only 4-3 when Face
came in. And if it hadn’t been
for Clemente’s defensive play,
the Braves well might have
won.
Clemente, last year’s most
valuable player in the National
League, made four great catch
es and two almost unbelievable
throws.
The Braves and Pirates go at
it again tonight in Game 2 of
their current four-game series.
Lefthander Denny Lemaster
(2-1) will try to cool the Pi
rates’ bats while righthander
Dennis Ribant (1-1) will start
for Pittsburgh.
