SHANNON AIRPORT, Ireland
(UPD—Jacqueline Kennedy and
her two children arrived today
in a kind of fulfilment of John
F. Kennedy’s promise four
years ago to come back to ‘‘the
green and misty isle.”
The late President’s wife
smiled and w r aved to thousands
of Irish who cheered the
welcome “cead mile failte go
Eireann”—loo,ooo welcomes to
Ireland.
‘‘Now I know what Jack
meant,” Mrs. Kennedy said.
His visit without his family to
the home of his forefathers in
the last summer of his life had
deeply moved Kennedy and he
told his wife about it. That was
one reason Irish guards were at
his burial.
Today Mrs. Kennedy surveyed
the crowd and said she felt she
was “coming home.” She would
come back, she said, “again

Kennedy Vacation
Mrs. Kennedy, Caroline and
John came to spend a six-week
vacation and it touched this
sentimental nation.
Government and poeple
planned to make it as quiet a
vacation as possible. It was
impossible.
Thundrous applause rolled
across the foggy airport when
Mrs. Kennedy, in a powder blue
A-line style coat, stepped from
the Irish International Aer
Lingus jet airliner.
Caroline, 10, to no one’s
surprise, skipped down the steps
first, wearing a gray coat and a
little white bow in her hair.
John, 6, in a tan suit, held his
mother’s hand as the crowd
saluted them. Jacqueline Kenne
dy waved her free hand.

ago. Today seemed like a
homecoming of sorts.
Embraces Kinfolk
Jacqueline Kennedy embraced
her husband’s cousins.
“I have looked forward so
much to meeting you. My
husband spoke so often about
you,” she said.
She had to coax little John
forward. ‘‘Shake hands,” she
said.
John did, shyly.
“He’s not often so shy,” she
said, smiling.
The crowd at the airport
came from over the country. A
large banner from Waterford,
where the Kennedy’s will stay,
said, “Welcome to our coun
try.”
It seemed an understatement.
The 100 miles to Woodstown
House, where the Kennedys will
vacation, was lined with bunting
and American flags.
BACK SEAT DRIVER
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (UPD—
The motorist had no driver’s
license, no automobile insurance
and improper license plates, so
patrolman Carl Hoglen called
for a wrecker to tow the vehicle
away for storage Thursday.
“No, no,” the arrested
motorist screamed, “you can’t
store the car because my wife
is in the trunk.”
Opening the trunk, Hoglen
found the wife reclining inside,
unharmed. She explained that
she had had an argument with
her husband and refused to ride
up front with him.
