Unity
(And The Lack Os It)
An Israeli army much smaller than the enemy licked the
tar out of the Arabs in record time.
How come ?
As we see it, the Israelis were better trained, could
mobilize quicker and were aggressive in combat. And Israel
was united. Israel had its political and other problems, but
saving the nation itself came before bickering at home.
Isn’t it a shame that we are not united here in America
in our struggle in Vietnam? If we had been as united as
Israel, we’d have won victory long ago. In the meantime,
the “right” to embarrass the nation and to defy duly con
stituted authority seems to prevail in far too many quarters
over the duty of contributing to the best interests of the
United States.
That’s a “right” that seems wrong to us.
It Really IS
A Small World
In a new magazine called “Psychology Today,” Dr.
Stanley Milgram of Harvard University reports on a pro
ject he conducted to discover the speed with which con
tact could be made between perfect strangers using the
medium of mutual acquaintances.
In one experiment, he chose a “target” person in Massa
chusetts. “Starter” persons in Kansas and Nebraska were
told the target’s name, location and employment and were
given a document to send to him. But they were only per
mitted to send the document to someone they knew on a
first-name basis who, in turn, would pass it on until it
reached someone who knew the target personally.
Only four days were needed to make contact between a
Kansas wheat farmer and a Cambridge, Mass., divinity stu
dent, and only two intermediaries were required—a minis
ter friend of the farmer and a seminary instructor at Cam
bridge.
Out of 44 chains completed by Nebraska starters, the
number of intermediaries ranged from two to 10. The
median number was five.
Milgram’s experiments have more than curiosity value.
He believes there is an application to such serious problems
of noncommunication as that between Whites and Negroes,
between economic groups and between nations.
It is reassuring to think that despite the fractionizing of
the world into ideologies, religions, clubs, cliques and a
thousand other larger or smaller islands—that no matter
how populous the world may become and how insignifi
cant the individual may feel or how remote he may be from
those who occupy the centers of power and decision
everyone ultimately knows everyone else through longer
or snorter chains of friends.
Plant Pines
On Rights-Of-Way
METROPOLITAN HERALD, ATLANTA
There have been suggestions from several sources that
one way the Georgia Highway Department could beautify
the Interstate Highway System is by planting pine trees
along the rights-of-way.
We think this is a good suggestion. Not only would these
trees hide ugly spots along the system, they would make
driving easier on the motorists’ eyes and could provide a
source of revenue for the department.
Georgia needs to do something along this line. The trees
would actually make the system look like a giant driveway
and at the same time add beauty to our state.
This is a project that should interest the hundreds of
garden clubs throughout the state. These ladies are always
in the forefront of any movement that might make our
state more beautiful.
Here’s hoping this proposal will be given careful study
by the proper authorities.

MY A
ANSWER
Natural Law
Just before the disaster in Wa
les which took the lives of 2*lo
school children, these children
had just finished a prayer which
ended, “Thank you for every
thing, God.” Were these child
ren being punished for their
sins? And what of the millions
of criminals who sin against God
and their families, and live to a
ripe old age? E.P.
This same question was asked
of Jesus. The tower of Siloam
had fallen and eighteen people
were crushed, and they asked
Him if these were sinners above
all men. He said, ”1 tell you,
nay: but except ye repent, ye
shall all likewise perish." (Luke
13:5.)
There are accidents of nature,
and people are quick to blame
God for every tragedy, and won
der why He could not have stop
ped it. The tower of Siloam fell,
no one was to blame, it was the
result of natural law, and the
people that were killed were not
sinners above anyone else. It
happened, and no one, not even
God was to blame.
Why did Jesus say to the peo
ple who asked that question:
"Except ye repent, ye shall all
likewise perish?” They were us
ing the incident to bring God's
love and mercy into question,
were therefore unbelieving, and
needed to repent of their unbe
lief. Those who use fW'cidents of
nature to bring God’s love and
concern into question, need to
revise their ideas about God: in
other words, need to repent.
They need to know that God ne
ver did an unjust thing, but
that His mercy is from everlast
ing to everlasting.
