Commie Force Virtually
Wiped Out LIS Army Unit
By EUGENE V. RISHER
SAIGON (UPD—A Commu
nist force virtually wiped out a
134-man U.S. Army company
before being destroyed in a
Mekong Delta rice paddy battle,
American spokesmen revealed
today.
U.S. officials withheld until
now Monday’s destruction of
Alpha Company of the 4th
Battalion, 47th Brigade of the
9th Infantry Division to allow
time for informing relatives at
home. Rarely in the war has an
American company suffered so
heavily.
Alpha was destroyed in a
seven-hour fight during which
249 of an estimated 300
Communists were killed and in
which American losses were
reported as 32 men killed and
126 wounded. Maj. Clyde J.
Tate of Fort Riley, Kan., a 9th
Division intelligence officer, told
newsmen 75 per cent of the
American casualties were men
of Alpha.
Almost Wiped Out
That meant about 120 of the
company’s 134 men were killed
or wounded in the fight. Tate
was asked if that meant Alpha
was virtually wiped out.
“That’s right,” he said.
Alpha paid the price for being
the first U.S. unit to spot and
engage the Communists in the
fighting just south of Saigon.
Tate said Alpha was a routine
search and destroy mission
when pinned down by recoilless
rifle, automatic and small arms
fire corning from Viet Cong
bunkers. The company was
Maddox Given
Authority To
Name Delegates
ATLANTA (UPD—The Geor
gia Democratic Party Execu
tive Committee has granted
Gov. Lester Maddox and party
chairman James Gray the pow
er to appoint state delegates to
the Democratic National Con
vention.
The action was taken Wed
nesday at a meeting at the
state Capitol attended by Mad
dox, Gray, Lt. Gov. George T.
Smith and former Gov. Carl
Sanders.
Previously, a delegate an<| al
ternate to the convention were
named by the Democratic
chairman of each congressional
district. The move was a major
party rules change.
New subcommittee chairmen
nominated were W. D. Trlppe,
Cedartown, chairman of the fi
nance subcommittee, and Jack
Ray, Atlanta, auditing subcom
mittee chairman.
Trlppe said an audit would
be made to reorganize financi
al affairs' of the state party
and top priority would be given
to efforts to put the party back
on a sound financial basis.
Maddox told the committee
“I pledge my full support and
I seek your full support... Even
with diversification in thinking
we can be the controlling
party."
Methodists
Back Church
East Lake
ATLANTA (UPD — Bishop
John Owen Smith has called
the North Georgia Methodist
Church Conference's move to
create a fully-integrated church
"one of Georgia Methodism’s
finest hours.”
Smith, who is presiding over
the annual conference at
Emory University, said he was
gladdened to see people "stop
running and getting down to do
ing the work of Jesus Christ."
The 1,000 conference dele
gates Wednesday voted over
whelmingly to create their first
fully - integrated local church,
East Lake Methodist Church
near Decatur.
The conference agreed to help
pay operational expenses of the
church, which will attempt to
develop a fullscale racially inte
grated program in East Lake,
a transitional area.
About 75 white members of
the church petitioned the con
ference, saying they wanted to
continue their congregation with
a ministry to all persons In the
changing neighborhood.
If the project succeeds, the
church will be the first fully
integrated congregation in the
nine-state Methodist Southeast
ern Jurisdiction. A white min
ister will be appointed pastor
Friday and a Negro associate
pastor may be appointed later
In the year.
The Methodists will focus
their attention today on pari
mutuel betting. Dr. Cecil My
ers, pastor of Atlanta’s Grace
Methodist Church, said he

calling on Georgia Methodists
to oppose possible legalization
of gambling in the legislature.
caught in a clear stretch of rice
paddy.
The major said contact with
the company was broken.
Helicopters whirled in to pick
up the unit. But the Communist
guns turned on the helicopters
which could not reach Alpha.
Two more U.S. companies
landed from special armored
barracks boats. The Communist
fire blazed at them but the new
units suffered far less heavily.

U.S. troops today reported

near major American airfields

South Vietnam’s central coast.
The 10-hour battle Wednesday

wounds in the Bong Son plain

of the Ist Air Cavalry found the
Viet Cong battalion dug into
well fortified positions only a
few miles from a big American
jet base. Thousands of Commu

two years trying to set up

below their Inland mountain
hideways.
The U.S. company found itself
outnumbered 3-to-l. Two more
