Cadet Selected
To Visit Canada
Civil Air Patrol Cadet Capt.
Jack Landham II has been
selected by the International
Air Cadet Exchange to visit Ca
nada. He was selected as an out
atanding cadet on the basis of
his leadership of the Griffin
Composite Squadron Cadets.
The purpose of the IACE Is to
foster international understand
ing, goodwill and fellowship.
Eighteen nations will participate
in the exchange of cadets.
On his trip to Canada, Capt.
Landham will spend approxima
tely 20 one days in his host coun
try, where he will visit histori
cal landmarks, Industrial pl
ants, aviation and aerospace fa
cilities and museums.
The IACE will commence July
19, with all cadets visiting high
lights in New York City. The
conclusion will be in Washing
ton, D.C. Aug. 11, when visiting
cadets will tour the nation’s cap
itol and join American Cadets
returning from abroad for a mi
litary ball at Bolling Air Force
Base officers open mess.
Firemen Answer
Automobile Fires
The Griffin Fire Department
reported answering an automo
bile fire Sunday afternoon at
3:42 p.m. at the 100 block of
East Tinsley street. Cause of the
fire was undetermined with con
siderable damage reported to
the dash and wiring. Owner of
the 1962 Corvair was Claudette
Langford.
At 10:30 p.m. firemen were
called to Hill and Solomon st
reets, to an automobile fire. A
defective carburetor was repor
ted as cause and damage was
reported to the carburetor only.
Horace Durden was the ow
ner of the 1957 Chevrolet.

Camping Trip
Junior Girl Scout Troop 245 of
Sacred Heart School went on a
two-day camping trip to Pine
Valley Girl Scout Camp in
Meansville.
Activities enjoyed by the troop
were fire building, outdoor
cooking. Scouts Own, flag cere
mony and hiking.

Miss Annie Duke
Buried Today
Miss Annie Dean Duke of 131
North 11th street, Griffin died
Saturday afternoon at her home
after an illness of several mon
ths.
Miss Duke was a lifelong resi
dent of Spalding County and the
daughter of the late Monroe
Duke and the late Mrs. Mattie
Kinard Duke. She was an em
ploye of the Griffin Laundry for
29 years. Miss Duke was a mem
ber of the Rehoboth Baptist
Church.
Survivors Include three sis
ters. Mrs. Clyde Maddox of Ha
peville. Mrs. Lillie Futural and
Mrs. Willie Brown, both of Grif
fin; and several nieces and nep
hews.
Funeral services were conduc
ted this afternoon at 3 o’clock
from the Rehoboth Baptist Chur
ch with the Rev. Cecil Dix and
the Rev. H. P. McDonald offic
iating. Burial was in the Re
hoboth cemetery. Pittman Rawls
Funeral Home was in charge of
plans.

Pilots Are
Identified
BRUNSWICK, Ga. (UPD —
Three students aboard a T-39
training jet which crashed into
the Okefenokee Swamp near
Folkston Thursday were pub
licly identified Sunday.
A spokesman at Glynco Na
val Air Station identified the
three as Marine Ist Lt. Thomas
C. Satterlee, husband of Linda
Sue Satterlee (6712 Ward Park
way), Melbourne, Fla.: Marine
2nd Lt. Warren R. Brundage
Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. War
ren R. Brundage Sr., (2422 Cy
prus) Manasquan, N.J.; and
Marine 2nd Lt. Walter W. Lub
bee Jr., husband of Patricia
Camille Lubbee (97 Highgate
Terrace), Bergenfield, N.J.
Two instructors on the flight
were identified earlier as Navy
Lt. James W. Hughes of St.
Simons Island, Ga., pilot of the
aircraft; and Marine Capt. Ron
ald B. Tuttle of Brunswick,
Ga., navigator.
Although the plane crashed
Thursday near the Georgia-
Florida line, the bodies were
not recovered until late Friday
because of the dense swamp
undergrowth.
The bodies of the crewmen
were found in a disintegrated
form and an Air Force path
ologist spent Saturday trying to
identify them.

tation over the weekend by the
Department of Labor in co
operation of American Legion
Post 15.
The award was made to the
Griffin firm for its employment
of older workers.
Johnny L. Mobley, Chairman
of the Employment Committee
of the American Legion, presen
ted the citation to John West of
Spalding Knitting Mill.
The award was made at the
Legion State Convention at Ma
con.
Named for Chief
Illinois has a state park near
Rock Island which was named
for the famous Indian chief
Black Hawk, who fought a bat
tle here to save the land for his
people.

Jackson Dies
JACKSON, Ga. — Funeral ser
vices for Mr. William Cliett Red
man, Sr., of 459 East Second st
reet, Jackson, Ga., were held
at the Stark Methodist Church
in Butts County Sunday after
noon at 5 p.m. The Rev. Ed Gal
loway, pastor, and the Rev. Jes
se Roy Thompson officiated
and burial was in' the church ce
metery.
Mr. Redman died Saturday at
noon. He was a member of the
‘Stark Methodist Church and
was a lifelong resident of Butts
County. Mr. Redman was a re
tired farmer.
Funeral arangements were
announced by Haisten Funeral
Home of Jackson.
RETALIATION?
EL PASO, Tex. (UPD—
Leonard Snow, 48, got into an
argument with his wife Satur
day and she went off to a
neighbor’s house to cool down.
Snow sent the couple’s daughter
to the house with instructions to
tell mommie to come outside
and watch daddy run the car
into a utility pole.
As Mrs. Snow and the
neighbor looked on in amaze
ment, police said, Snow roared
around the block at about 50
miles an hour and rammed the
car into the pole.
Snow was reported in fair
condition today at a hospital
with internal injures and
lacerations. He was charged
with negligent collision.

LONDON (UPD—What the
British consider a heat wave
gripped London Tuesday. The
noon temperature was 77,
highest midday reading since
Aug. 26, 1964.
