Fans who go to see the
knuckleballer pitch can count
on a tight pitcher’s duel, with
Niekro making one or two
debonair efforts to scuttle his
own- cause along the way.
Then they can plan on a
rocky ninth for their hero, gen
erally capped by a breathless
finish and another win for the
former fireman.
More than 35,000 persons saw
the full show at Atlanta Sta
dium Sunday when Niekro and
the Braves stopped Pittsburgh
2-1.
He locked horns with aging
Vern Law Sunday and they
went into the fifth in a score
less tie. At that point, the
Braves gave Niekro the narrow
est of leads when Clete Boyer
singled, went to third on Woody
Woodward’s single in a picture
perfect hit-run play, and scored
on Bob Decker’s sacrifice fly.
Niekro, always the gentle
man, allowed the Pirates to
even it up immediately. He got
a third strike past Matty Alou,
but Decker couldn’t find the
handle on the knuckleball and
Alou easily beat the throw to
first.
Niekro promptly tried to pick
Alou off first and threw the
ball away. Alou scampered to
third and Gene Alley’s long fly
brought him home.
The Braves doggedly gave
Niekro back his lead in the
sixth. Felipe Alou drilled a hard
double to center. Marty Mar
tinez hit a soft grounder to
Pirates second baseman Bill
Mazeroski, who tried to nail
Alou at third and failed. Mar
tinez was safe on the fielder’s
choice.
Alou tried to score on Rico
Carty’s grounder to short and
was thrown out easily, Martinez
taking third. Mack Jones then
lined a single down the right
field line to score Martinez with
the winning run.
Niekro sailed along smoothly
until the top of the ninth, and
Roberto Clemente filed out to
start the inning. But Willie
Stargell singled and Mazeroski’s
long double sent him to third,
the fifth hit off Niekro.
But the knuckleballer made
Donn Clendenon pop up and
then struck out Jose Pagan—
his 11th strikeout of the day—
to end the game.
