Frazier Stops Chuvalo;
Apparent Heir To Title
By WILLIAM VERIGAN
UPI Sports Writer
NEW YORK (UPI»—Joe Fra
zier appeared firmly established
today as heir apparent to the
heavyweight throne after stop
ping rugged Canadian George
Chuvalo who had never been
knocked out in 62 previous
fights.
The end for Chuvalo came as
he was left slashed and
insensible at 16 seconds of the
fourth round Wednesday night
at Madison Square Garden.
Chuvalo’s proudest boast was
that he had never been knocked
off his feet or stopped, but his
durability record came to an
abrupt halt under Frazier’s
vicious attack.
A final left hook to the cheek
bone blinded the Canadian, and
referee Johnny Colan stopped
the slaughter.
“I thought the left to the right
cheek bone exploded his eye
ball,” said the 23-year-old
Frazier, who remained the only
unbeaten heavyweight contender
by boosting his record to 17-0.
“He wasn’t stopped on cuts. He

This is one of our finest carpets. It has met and surpassed high standards for

additional yarn into its surface for longer wear, better appearance. The yarn
is special, too — it’s continuous filament nylon . . . resists shedding, pilling and
fuzzing . . . keeps its new look.
The high-low loop pile pattern is styled in a dimensional pattern — one of
the favorites of decorators. High quality, too, in the carpet backing — it’s

was hit on the button and he
knew he was going down so he
turned away.”
The 204% - pound Frazier
wasted no time in opening a cut
on the left side of Chuvalo’s
face before a minute had gone
by in the first round of the
scheduled 12-round heavyweight
elimination bout.
Another cut was opened under
Chuvalo’s right eye in the first
round, and a vicious left in the
second round turned the 217%-
pound Canadian’s face into a
mask of crimson. The commis
sion doctor said the cuts were
"superficial” but they poured
blood for the remainder of the
bout. A doctor added that
another jarring blow to the eye
might have permanently da
maged Chuvalo’s vision.
Although he could hardly see
out of his right eye, Chuvalo
gamely battled back in the third
round and staggered Frazier
with a blow to the top of the
head.
That was Chuvalo’s last bid
for victory as he was pushed
into the ropes by Frazier and
pounded with a two-fisted body
attack. Chuvalo seemed to
realize that his long tenure as a
title contender was coming to
an end, and barely moved from
his corner in the fourth round
before Frazier ran across the
ring and renewed the attack.
Unable to See
"I just turned away trying to
get my vision,” said Chuvalo.
"I couldn't see anything, but I
thought if I could get my vision
back I might be able to
continue.”
Asked if the loss ended his
title hopes, the optimistic
Chuvalo replied, "Just tempora
rily. He was the better man this
night, but it could be different
another time.”
There are unlikely to be any
second chances for Chuvalo,
however. He had been the 10th
rated contender before the bout,
but his last impressive victory
came in 1964 against Doug
Jones. The 29-year-old Cana
dian, who had 12 straight
kayoes over second - raters,
seems doomed to the status of
trial horse for other talented
youngsters.
By stopping Chuvalo, a feat
that deposed champion Cassius-
Clay wasn’t able to accomplish,
the second - ranked Frazier
marked himself as the man to
beat for the vacant title.
“I hope to meet the No. 1
contender,” said the jubilant
Joe. "That’s (Karl) Mildenber
ger.”
Garden officials said that
Frazier should consider himself
the top contender now, but
added they would try to arrange
a bout with the German during
November or December. Mil
denberger is committed to
participate in a World Boxing
Association heavyweight tour
nament, and a loss in the
tourney is the only way he is
likely to get a chance to meet
Frazier.
