It is presently rated as the 10th leading cause of dea th and the third leading cause of blindness in the state. In ad dition to blindness and death, uncontrolled diabetes can lead to impaired blood circulation, frequently causing gangrene and loss of limbs. Other chronic dis eases such as heart disease and hypertension are affected by dia betes. Anyone can have diabetes, however, there are four main groups in which diabetes is most likely to develop. These are: (1) Blood relatives of other diabe tics. The tendency to have dia betes can be inherited. The pre valence of diabetes in relatives of diabetics is five times as gr eat as other groups; (2) Persons over 40. Only about five percent of diabetics develop the disease before they are 15 years old. In persons over 40 the number is at least five times as great. (3) Overweight persons. More than 80 percent of diabetics are over weight when they develop diabe tes. (4) Mothers of large babies. Mothers repeatedly delivering babies that weigh nine pounds or more at birth, may be diabe tic. The most common early signs of diabetes are excessive thirst, frequently urination, excessive hunger, loss of weight, failing eyesight, itching, pain in fingers and toes, weakness, tiring eas ily and drowsiness. Frequently in the early stages of diabetes, some or all of these signs may not be manifested. Persons who experience these warning signs should seek medical attention promptly. v r ~ ,i W Wm Ip I i m _ ~4;J» . i Ik { dig* i||pL a 'X * Kit jL jfe- - 4 JP , Jf Jfl I (Griffin Daily News Staff Photo) Billy Simmons, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Simmons of Griffin, was named outstanding camper at Camp Safety Patrol last week.
