WASHINGTON — — Illinois
Gov. Otto Kerner, describing
the task facing him and other
members of the committee
chosen by President Johnson to
study reasons for Negro rioting
in urban areas:
‘‘The saddest mission that
any of us in our careers have
been asked to pursue.”
WASHINGTON—An editorial
in the Republican Congressional
Committee Newsletter, on the
Johnson administration’s handl
ing of urban rioting:
“The President, who obvious
ly doesn't want to offend any
voting bloc with an election
coming up, apparently lacks the
courage to do anything about it
(the rioting).”
PEARL HARBOR—Adm. Roy
L. Johnson, commander in chief
of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, after
learning of the destructive fire
on the aircraft carrier Forrestal
off Vietnam:
“I have no doubt that despite
the severe damage Forrestal
has sustained, she will again
serve her country with the
same distinction that has
marked her 12 years in the
Atlantic and Pacific fleets.”

Babe Ruth Tournament
A Special Week
For Griffin
Griffin is mighty pleased to be host this week to the
Southeast Region Babe Ruth baseball tournament.
This is a baseball town, particularly when it comes to
high school, Babe Ruth, American Legion, Little League
and other programs for boys. Griffin has produced its share
of champions. Probably more important still the various
baseball programs for boys have provided clean recreation
for thousands in Griffin.
The Babe Ruth program is one of the very best, and
Griffin is more than happy to have the top teams of the
Southeast play here this week.
The community has gone all out to make the boys’ visit
to Griffin memorable in every way. Scores of G r i f f i n
homes have opened their doors in the true spirit of South
ern hospitality and invited players to be their guests
throughout the tournament. The host team, parents and
officials have worked hard and well preparing for what is
being called a “once in a lifetime” event. Cooperation has
been splendid.
As a result, this promises to be a very special week in
deed in the sports life of Griffin. Now, let’s “Play ball!”
DeGaulle Has
Some Troubles
Charles DeGaulle’s flirtation with Russia is apparently
beginning to show some ill effects in France.
Business men don’t trust the Kremlin. There are indica
tions they would like a softening of DeGaulle’s U. S. atti
tude and less effort toward a French - Russian axis.
Germany, one of France’s biggest customers, is looking
with creased eyebrows at DeGaulle’s playing around with
the Kremlin. Germans don’t relish the idea of her funds
going to Russia indirectly. This may be one reason why
France’s exports to Germany are slipping, bringing on un
employment and economic troubles.

Scarlett Dies
WAYCROSS JOURNAL - HERALD
“The girl I select must be possessed of the devil and
charged with electricity.”
Film director George Cukor was speaking and he was
referring to the casting for the part of Scarlett O’Hara in
the epic film of the South “Gone With The Wind.”
Many people were surprised when Vivien Leigh was
picked for the most coveted role in film history in the place
of some of the biggest names in the movie industry.
The British actress made believers of the skeptics who
doubted if she could portray a Southern belle convincingly.
She got rave notices in the reviews. Some of the writers
said the part was “made for her.”
“Gone With The Wind,” opposite the great Clark Gable,
was Miss Leigh’s high mark but she did well in other movies
and stage productions.
But wherever she went until the day she died people
would refer to her as Scarlett O’Hara.
The passing of the beautiful and talented actress rings
down the curtain on the story of what many believe to be
the greatest motion picture of all time.
Gable preceded his co-star in death several years ago.
Most of the other members of the cast have also died as has
Atlanta’s Margaret Mitchell, the author of the immortal
novel.
Needless to say, “Gone With The Wind”, both as a book
and a movie, stirred the American people as few works of
literature and art have in this century.

MY A
ANSWER
Life Not Easy
My minister says that God
knows and understands all my
troubles. What good does that
do when I need help? M.W.
Life on this planet is never
easy. Trouble and heartache are
our constant companions. But
no one is beyond the scope of
God’s mercy and help. He has
said, “I will be with you in time
of trouble; I will deliver him and
honor him.”
I contend that God not only
“knows and understands”, but
He “is a constant help in time
of trouble.”
Let us look at the problem this
way. Let us say that you have a
very rich and benevolent fath
er. In your early years you de
cide to go it alone. Your renoun
ce your inheritance and decide
to go your own way. Your fath
er, believing in individuality, lets
you ply your own course. Then,
you run into bad luck. Your
health fails, you lose your job,
you are In hard straits. Finally,
knowing not where to turn, you
write your wealthy, understand
ing father. You confess that your
pride led you astray. You tell
him that you would like help in
getting your life straightened
out. Can you conceive of such a
father refusing to help the one
he loves dearly?
The Bible says: “If ye then
being evil, know how to give
good gifts unto your children,
how much more shall your hea
venly Father give good things to
them that ask him?”
God not only knows your need,
but He stands ready to meet it.
